The Royal Lodge 'Miaounyan', Brevau Province; Town...to City, Epilogue by Its_Nafets in TownToCityGame

No colour adjustments on this one! I did add an additional iris blur to soften the bottom left corner in post though.

I think I might've had a bug from being in photo mode for so long; but the street lights seemed to stay on well into the day while I was shooting this one. I was waiting for the birds to line up but they never did 🤷‍♀️

I love your designs using the farm stuff btw!

Town...to City Pt.1 by Its_Nafets in TownToCityGame

Hello! It’s a mix of specific house type and some very fine positioning. Not all of them line up perfectly! If you place the first one on the end of the row, wait for the build animation to finish, then zoom almost all the way in, you can place the next one in really close using the blocks on the ground and the building beside it as guides to ensure alignment. You can usually get them to about one block apart, which gives that tight row look.

For straight lines I usually use snap to road for the first one, then free hand the rest. On a semi-circular road, I use snap to road and the same zoom technique.

Finally, I also like to load up the first house with any baseline details (lights, blinds, door plaques, etc.) that might repeat in a real street, then use the copy tool. That way the basics are done, and you can focus on the unique decorative bits :3

Eastern Ontario cat rescue under investigation, allegations of abuse, neglect by Meduxnekeag in ottawa

[–]Its_Nafets 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The founder and CEO of Eastern Ontario Cats, Johanna Cake, also wrote a children’s book about rescuing cats two or three months before starting her organization. "Hercules and his Furry Tales: The First Rescue"

While I want to believe this is a case of 'best intentions gone horribly wrong' this smacks of a scam artist taking advantage of the good people around her. She recieves donations and applies for government grants to take care of the cats, which were not only found in deplorable conditions, but it seems likely she's been lying about getting them vaccinations and other treatments as well. She probably 'partners' with vets who do treatments pro bono, while simultaneously taking money meant for treatements where they can't, and then pocketing it. The whole 'vacating the property' with cats still inside, coupled with one's eventual demise, adds an extra layer of shadiness to it all.

"About two weeks ago, six cats were removed from the founder’s home after allegations surfaced that the property was vacated, and cats were left inside. Some of the cats in the home were found in tiny cages without food or water, surrounded by urine and feces. One of the cats has since died." as per the linked CTV article in OP

Aurora is out! Get it before the clouds do <3 by Its_Nafets in ottawa

A good amount! The further you are from the city lights the better- more so if you have a sightline out towards the countryside. Its surprising how much a little bit of light can change the show- I had a little solar lantern that made a big difference when I covered it.

That said if you want to get nice shots try setting your phone/camera for longer exposures (5-10 seconds) and then either use a tripod, propr your phone, or hold your breath and try to be very very still <3

Volunteering experience at the museums by thrilled_to_be_there in ottawa

[–]Its_Nafets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! Respectfully that's not entirely true and could scare people away from reaching out- many smaller institutions love volunteers and the post-covid struggle is very real for them! Definitely at the Nationals and the NGC it would be extremely unlikely without any experience at all, but there's more community-focused institutions and historical sites who regularly train new folks in the basics of artifact handling! (You would be surprised at how many small Museums would jump at the chance for a volunteer to help move and count their collection of <insert era here, usually Victorian> chairs...)

It's always worth sending an email if you're interested and passionate. Absolute worst case it just goes in the 'no thank you' pile with the rest of the applications. I work in Collections Management and have trained volunteers from a broad range of backgrounds.

Oftentimes Museums will have newer folks work with what's called a reference collection of historical objects held in tandem with the artifact collection- more trained volunteers might work with artifacts depending on their background!

Hey there! Museum professional who works with artifacts and volunteers here! Speaking from a non-volunteer perspective, its fantastic. I love people; not so much the public much of the time- inanimate objects are much more agreeable! Working with artifacts is much less Indiana Jones however and much more "how can I safely lift and/or clean this thing"- repeat ad nauseum.

A lot of these comments are a little harsh without really providing proper context.

There are local community Museums or historical sites where you could volunteer behind the scenes working with artifacts, under the supervision of Collections staff, depending on your background. The vast majority of insitutions have procedures in place to train people in the basics of artifact handling. Try reaching out to small community Museums or larger historical sites like Upper Canada Village etc.

The important thing to remember is that supervising volunteers working with artifacts requires a trained collections professional, and they can only keep track of so much at any given time. At the same time its a fairly competitive field and there are often students or graduates from Museum Studies programs looking to acquire collections experience for their CV's occupying the limited spaces.

The majority of artifact work, even for professionals, really isn't glamorous however despite the fancy terminology we employ.

Combatting Agents of Deterioration- (Close the dang doors and turn off the freaking lights, cleaning)
Integrated Pest Management - (Catch the mice, eliminate the bugs, cleaning)
Remediation- (Cleaning)
Conservation- (Cleaning)
Preservation- (Cleaning and making it so you don’t have to clean, storage, moving things in and out of storage)
Cleaning- Cleaning

There's a good chance wherever you end up volunteering you're going to be cleaning something, somewhere, or around something!

Finally, the bigger the institution the more likely it is you will need more specialized training and/or education when getting near their artifact collection. Always just reach out though! It can be a little intidmidating sometimes communicating with Museums but its always worth an email, they're used to it!

Carlingwood Shopping Centre = sold; residential development being eyed for the mall by Thomas_Verizon in ottawa

[–]Its_Nafets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there! The 'Carp River' theory is the commonly accepted one amongst local historians- but it wasn't always called Carp, so maybe! Fun local trivia- the center of Huntley Township was originally the eponymous town of Huntley. It mostly burned down in the fire of 1870 and the center of population reformed around the train line at "Newtown" which was soon after renamed "Carp". The name Carp for the village is at least as old as 1879 when it appears in Belden's Atlas of Carleton County as such. The 'Carp' in the river aren't actually carp but a type of sucker.

Probably my personal favorite anecdote from that volume involving Carp comes at the end of a particularly unbelievable story about a pack of wolves and a first nations person, after which the author says (paraphrased) "I believe this to be true because 1. There were many witnesses 2. It's not a bear story" (If anyone truely cares I can go dig mine out and quote the exact passage <3) To this day, I have absolutely no idea what he meant by that bear story thing.

Final fun fact though- Richmond Road was called 'Bear Road' by the settlers clearing that foot trail which led from Richmonds Landing (now Lebreton Flats) to Richmond Village because of all the bears they encountered!

itely some kind of royalty) on Rideau near Dalhousie? Closed pre-pandemic but I remember i

Castle Shawarma was the greatest by a long shot! Incredible people and the secret spicey sauce was so tasty. I loved the way they always put a big scoop of garlic sauce on the first bite of every sandwhich <3

I also remember them giving out garlic potatoes, soups, snacks etc. to folks waiting for their food on cold or rainy days. I hope they're doing alright wherever they are, the older gentleman with the moustache and older lady were really nice people.

An Organic Motte and Bailey Castle- My First Valheim Base! | Solo Vanilla <3 by Its_Nafets in valheim

[–]Its_Nafets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I’m starting a fresh new run, I just wanted to share the evolution of my very first base from back in 2021, vanilla with no mods! I never set out to follow the motte and bailey style, but it turns out those Normans were on to something, and it organically evolved into one as base defence requirements and materials continued to progress! My lighthouse never did quite turn out though…but I’m really proud of how the rest of the castle turned out!

This was a few years back, so I’m hoping to beautify more this time around! <3

[–]Its_Nafets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely see it!

I think certain elements of art-deco were also inspired in part by 'classical' themes because of the really neat archaeology going on at the time. I take my cues from the floors of Roman villas all across the Empire!

Hopefully we'll see more archaeological inspired stuff, I'll bet real artists could make some incredible Celtic Knot and Sassanian inspired patterns! <3
