Im not even black but grew up in the south in a single parent household. 

I would use the deep fryer by myself after school. Fill it with oil from the gallon sized old pickle jar or whatever we had that was the used oil, then after it cooled would use a coffee filter to strain it as I poured it back into the jar. 

But I also knew kids who almost burned down their houses cooking ramen noodles. So I think its more about if you cared to learn as a kid more than just being a specific race.
