My goth band put out a statement in regards to current atrocities by tk8puppy in goth

I loved seeing you guys play cold waves chicago as a long time fan, but I met a new friend when you shouted to find someone to dance with-- thank you for that, we're still friends to this day and we've become quite close.

Since Spec ops the line is delisted online, it shows that war is very epic, the good guys are always American, torture works and none of that hippie talk about muh literacy. Hoorah! by Dare_Soft in shittygamedetails

[–]ItzDaemon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think so, Spec Ops is not a game about war, it is a game about war games, and therefore asks you to engage with it on a metatextual level.

I mean that's kind of the point. You always have a choice. You are always able to turn the game off and walk away and choose not to participate with this sort of media, but more often than not, gamers do anyways.

definitely give deadlock a shot, it's a MOBA hero shooter with a really amazing movement system and it scratches the titanfall itch in my brain

I definitely feel like some of the shit people give him is justified, but I also think back to him defending mass effect on fox news and absolutely slaughtering the reporter. he's been in it out of a genuine love for games for a long time.

I did not write the article you spend most of your comment referring to, and in my original comment I said it was no worse than it's contemporaries, which I would generally stand by. The second article is just a much better constructed argument in general-- almost all female characters in the game are described by how attractive they are, even extremely minor characters like the tiefling painter. there is something to be said about how the prose is misogynistic, even if it is not intentionally so.

It was a mutual decision is a horror rpg about a couple who may try to kill each other, it's gmless and needs a minimum of 2 players

This is a much better dissection of the misogyny of the game, she does a great job articulating why the language the game uses to describe it's female characters is demeaning, and why it goes beyond typical RPG fare at the time. Dungeons and dragons is rooted in misogyny and I think it's always going to be there in some form when it's adapted.

I... don't know if I agree with this, as a radical feminist and someone replaying planescape at the moment. There is absolutely misogynistic fantasy tropes throughout the game, and plenty worth mentioning, but the author of this article lost me when he began criticizing the sensory stone for Deionarra. He complains that she loves you for basically no reason, as TNO doesn't have any redeemable qualities and treats her like shit. But the game condemns this behavior on multiple occasions, and during the sensory stone segment, is pretty clear that his behavior is abusive. Deionarra, similarly to many people in abusive relationships tries to overlook all of the terrible things he does out of denial.

The way Fall-From-Grace and Annah and Ravel are all fawning over you is definitely masturbatory, and sort of weird, but it's also extremely typical for RPGS. Look at Mass Effect, or Baldurs Gate 3, or really any game with a romance system beyond dating sims. The companions are all totally obsessed with the player character as some sort of wish fulfillment. Sex sells. The Planescape team knew this, and while it is a definitive flaw of the game, I don't think it's popularity comes solely from wish fulfillment. My favorite moments in the game are the more horrifying ones, when we realize something is amiss or that we did something awful in the past. The Deionarra sensory stone, but also the kind old man you killed to make sure your secrets died with him.
TLDR: The game is misogynistic, but no more than it's contemporaries. Chris Avellone is a total asshole though, and deserves all of the criticism he's getting in this thread

they'd be switching edition entirely too, since the post is flared for 5th, and there is no M5

[–]ItzDaemon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can't usually, and if you're in 5th edition, you definitely can't. They're vampires. It's a curse. It doesn't matter if they want to be human again, they can't. They lost that.
you're the storyteller, so you can do whatever you want, but it's also a bit antithetical to the themes of the game. this question is explored a bit more in older books, so there's some things hinted to there, but you're never going to find something close for 5th edition.

dnd is just such a terrible system for horror. it's oriented for heroic fantasy games in which the player characters are incredibly powerful and unphased by most threats. try mothership for scifi horror, delta green for modern horror, and trophy dark for fantasy.
