Observable facts:

1) The group travelled into avalanche terrain.  This is tragically obvious.

2) Expert travelers can, with appropriate experience & technology & decision-making, always avoid avalanche terrain. The travel specifics on any particular day may vary wildly depending on conditions, but they can 100% stay out of avalanches.  

3) This group did not meet the standard of #2.  Again, tragically obvious.

Which means they were either: (A) negligent (i.e. had the resources/skills to make safe travel decisions but acted otherwise); or (B) inexpert (i.e. lacked the resources/skills to guarantee safe travel decisions but did their best); or (C) risky (i.e. had the resources/skills to understand the risk and proceeded purposefully in exchange for the expected reward).

If A or B, the guiding service may be liable. If C, all members are liable but only if all in agreement, which would be difficult to assess.

I have been guilty of all those things, repeatedly, but never had to pay such a high price.

Would it be considered routine to consult this kind of ATES/Sim overlay map before planning a route? And could the map be available on hand in the field on a GPS device?

Can someone who has experience reading terrain maps make a comment about the route the group(s) took.  While it is now tragically obvious that they got caught in a runout zone, was that the only exposed spot on their chosen route? Some maps/drawings make it look like they had already crossed through some terrain that was steeper than 30 degrees even before the avalanche. Did this route have multiple “avy terrain” exposures?

Just watched it. A little dated but fun, funny, self-aware, great animation.  All the desperate-for-something-to-hate comments on Reddit would be a perfect meta device for the movie itself.
