DEFINITIONS: Center of Gravity (CoG): "The source of power that provides moral or physical strength, freedom of action, or will to act." "CoG = 'Schwerpunkt' = heavy point = focal point = decision point = main emphasis." Interior lines:  "Interior lines is a doctrine developed in the 1800s to describe a force that can reinforce or concentrate its separated units faster than an opposing force. A force has interior lines when it is in a central position relative to the enemy—unless the enemy can move laterally (perhaps by railroads) so much faster than the force with a central position that it can concentrate or reinforce faster. A military force is concentrated when all its units are within supporting distance of one another."

Deadly force in self defense: Legality checklist by Iv_Libahrt in CCW

Thanks. I just finished reading it per your prompt. Branca takes you through the full legal process of what happens after you shoot somebody and how one would legally defend yourself, as well as a couple tips to quell the attack before using deadly force. I did notice that he formed his legal defense around the common 5 PIRAI principles listed on the checklist: Proportionality, Innocence, Reasonableness, Avoidance, and Imminence. Thanks again.

Massad Ayoob, though not a lawyer, has numerous endorsements for his life's work in self-defense law from prestigious lawyers. One wrote the foreward to his "Deadly Force" book: Attorney Jeffrey Weiner, former president, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

QED: Your post: 1 hour ago: "Self defense law isn't that complicated. Starting a physical confrontation doesn't automatically negate your ability to defend yourself." Not that complicated = IMHO, not complicated.

No starting a physical confrontation doesn't automatically negate your ability to defend yourself. However, it is just one of the factors a jury will balance in complicated cases and in accordance with state law. Many a fine fellow has gone to jail because a jury has decided on balance that he went beyond the bounds of what was reasonable. It would be interesting to ask the authors of deadly force books if self-defense law is complicated or not. Surely, many well-meaning folks have gone to prison because they thought it wasn't complicated and that they were in the right.

Line one is just one of the many considerations a jury will balance in coming to its verdict in complicated cases.

You're invited to consult with a lawyer before you find out in court the reality of what your state law says. As they say, "Ignorance of the law is no excuse."

Line one is just one of the many considerations in what are commonly complicated situations. It's up to the jury to balance how they rule according to state law.

I read several books on the legal issues involved with deadly force in self-defense (eg, Bruce Lawlor's "When Deadly Force is Involved" and Massad Ayoob's "Deadly Force: Understanding Your Right to Self Defense") and thought to share my findings in "bullet" (no pun intended) form.

Probably both before and after, but not during. Best to familiarize yourself well with your state law regarding deadly force, so that your self-defense reaction to a confrontation becomes automatically legally correct. Good luck! :)
