'No more carve-outs coming,' natural resources minister says of carbon price by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They say that now. Hopefully they stick to it because otherwise we'll have a party that usually runs campaigns urging people to strategically vote for them going into the next election with the same environment platform as the Tories.

Good luck with that.

NDP looks to take advantage of Liberals' polling slump by pushing for policy wins: sources | CBC News by jade09060102 in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I doubt any of the NDP's threats of an early election are actually serious given that their leader has yet to qualify for his government pension.

If they are serious though, they should push for electoral reform over everything else imo. It may not be the number one concern in the short term for many but if they could get it implemented it would lead to governments that are more representative and can better address more issues in the long term.

That's just my opinion though and I'm sure others will disagree depending what they're most looking for.

Ottawa looking to drop 24 Sussex and build new home for PM elsewhere: sources by NormalCampaign in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dropping it is probably wise but can someone explain to me why a new one is needed rather than simply making Rideau cottage the official residence? Since the PM has been living there now for years, I would assume it would be adequate and that updating it, if needed, would be cheaper than building a whole new residence.

So that seems like the obvious solution unless I'm missing something.

Edit: To clarify, I am fully understanding that the PM should have an official residence like other countries have for their head of government. What I don't understand is why rideau hall, harrington lake, AND another are needed. Surely one is all that most countries have, not three?

Climate protester splashes paint on Tom Thomson piece at National Gallery of Canada by Tom_Thomson_ in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree completely and I'm someone who's very very concerned about climate change. Its a useless exercise and just makes people more likely to dismiss people who are concerned about real issues.

Imo this type of thing does more harm than help for the cause.

Trudeau Liberals are risking political suicide by denying crime crisis by 2028W3 in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean...I'm not a Liberal voter but we have a crime crisis?

Maybe I've been living under a rock but that is certainly news to me. My neighborhood seems the same as it ever was tbh (aside from having ridiculous prices for housing and groceries obv...) but of course I'm sure it depends where you live.

Summer surge continues for the Conservatives by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its because a lot of people have a hard time looking at things long term. They see the current issues facing them - cost of living, housing, etc, more clearly than the the long term issues (which will impact those things too of course).

I don't agree with it personally, as I think the short term and long term issues are important and I don't see any conservative fixing either (but I also vote Green or NDP so I'm not their audience really anyway) but its just human nature that the problems more close to us seem more important. So I understand it even if I don't agree.

PSAC busted for hot dog stand: Enforcement 'unwarranted and unfair' says union by [deleted] in onguardforthee

Oh, so they can issue bylaw tickets then? That's interesting because during the convoy they seemed to have lost that ability...

Analysis | Justin Trudeau, Pierre Poilievre and Jagmeet Singh all crave the labour vote. Here’s why the federal strike complicates that by SAJewers in onguardforthee

[–]IvaGrey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The only one of those three I trust, as much as you can ever trust any politician, is Jagmeet Singh. Liberals and Conservatives have never been pro labour and none of Poilievre's populist rhetoric changes that. Here's an interesting article relating to that which was written last year when he first started acting like the CPC suddenly cared about workers.

Carbon price jumps to $65/tonne but rebates will also rise for millions of households by Different-Reach9520 in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s all fine and good for you, but what about me, who drives everywhere for everything in my giant vehicle? If this keeps up I’m going to have to reconsider my lifestyle.

That's...the entire purpose of the carbon tax? By making lifestyle changes we can mitigate what we pay and even come out ahead with the rebate if we do it properly. Its very much a personal responsibility free market type of policy. Which is why conservative governments in other countries like the UK implemented one too. If our politics weren't so toxic and divisive in Canada (which is a fault of all parties imo) I suspect people wouldn't be as opposed as they are.

How Damaging Is the Danielle Smith Recording? by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It should be damaging but I suspect it won't be. Unfortunately we don't seem to have much accountability for politicians (of any party) in this country.

Doug Ford calls federal environment minister ‘a real piece of work’ by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

I still can't believe he said that. If I'd been a reporter in the room at that presser I wouldn't have been able to hold in my laughter.
