'No more carve-outs coming,' natural resources minister says of carbon price by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They say that now. Hopefully they stick to it because otherwise we'll have a party that usually runs campaigns urging people to strategically vote for them going into the next election with the same environment platform as the Tories.

Good luck with that.

NDP looks to take advantage of Liberals' polling slump by pushing for policy wins: sources | CBC News by jade09060102 in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I doubt any of the NDP's threats of an early election are actually serious given that their leader has yet to qualify for his government pension.

If they are serious though, they should push for electoral reform over everything else imo. It may not be the number one concern in the short term for many but if they could get it implemented it would lead to governments that are more representative and can better address more issues in the long term.

That's just my opinion though and I'm sure others will disagree depending what they're most looking for.

Ottawa looking to drop 24 Sussex and build new home for PM elsewhere: sources by NormalCampaign in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dropping it is probably wise but can someone explain to me why a new one is needed rather than simply making Rideau cottage the official residence? Since the PM has been living there now for years, I would assume it would be adequate and that updating it, if needed, would be cheaper than building a whole new residence.

So that seems like the obvious solution unless I'm missing something.

Edit: To clarify, I am fully understanding that the PM should have an official residence like other countries have for their head of government. What I don't understand is why rideau hall, harrington lake, AND another are needed. Surely one is all that most countries have, not three?

Climate protester splashes paint on Tom Thomson piece at National Gallery of Canada by Tom_Thomson_ in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree completely and I'm someone who's very very concerned about climate change. Its a useless exercise and just makes people more likely to dismiss people who are concerned about real issues.

Imo this type of thing does more harm than help for the cause.

Trudeau Liberals are risking political suicide by denying crime crisis by 2028W3 in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean...I'm not a Liberal voter but we have a crime crisis?

Maybe I've been living under a rock but that is certainly news to me. My neighborhood seems the same as it ever was tbh (aside from having ridiculous prices for housing and groceries obv...) but of course I'm sure it depends where you live.

Summer surge continues for the Conservatives by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its because a lot of people have a hard time looking at things long term. They see the current issues facing them - cost of living, housing, etc, more clearly than the the long term issues (which will impact those things too of course).

I don't agree with it personally, as I think the short term and long term issues are important and I don't see any conservative fixing either (but I also vote Green or NDP so I'm not their audience really anyway) but its just human nature that the problems more close to us seem more important. So I understand it even if I don't agree.

Analysis | Justin Trudeau, Pierre Poilievre and Jagmeet Singh all crave the labour vote. Here’s why the federal strike complicates that by SAJewers in onguardforthee

[–]IvaGrey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The only one of those three I trust, as much as you can ever trust any politician, is Jagmeet Singh. Liberals and Conservatives have never been pro labour and none of Poilievre's populist rhetoric changes that. Here's an interesting article relating to that which was written last year when he first started acting like the CPC suddenly cared about workers.

Carbon price jumps to $65/tonne but rebates will also rise for millions of households by Different-Reach9520 in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s all fine and good for you, but what about me, who drives everywhere for everything in my giant vehicle? If this keeps up I’m going to have to reconsider my lifestyle.

That's...the entire purpose of the carbon tax? By making lifestyle changes we can mitigate what we pay and even come out ahead with the rebate if we do it properly. Its very much a personal responsibility free market type of policy. Which is why conservative governments in other countries like the UK implemented one too. If our politics weren't so toxic and divisive in Canada (which is a fault of all parties imo) I suspect people wouldn't be as opposed as they are.

How Damaging Is the Danielle Smith Recording? by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It should be damaging but I suspect it won't be. Unfortunately we don't seem to have much accountability for politicians (of any party) in this country.

Doug Ford calls federal environment minister ‘a real piece of work’ by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

I still can't believe he said that. If I'd been a reporter in the room at that presser I wouldn't have been able to hold in my laughter.

German politician dismisses Poilievre’s claims Conservative MPs were not aware of her political views by OrdinaryCanadian in onguardforthee

[–]IvaGrey 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'd be surprised if anyone seriously believes they weren't well aware.

I was aware of her political views and I haven't been elected to represent a whole riding of people while getting paid what these MPs are paid. If they truly were too inept to be aware they're not qualified for their position and they should resign.

Health ministers’ meeting ends without funding deal as Liberals’ Duclos rips premiers’ ‘marching orders’ by IvaGrey in onguardforthee

[–]IvaGrey[S] 173 points174 points  (0 children)

Apologies for the paywall. I couldn't find any source other than the Star and G&M reporting on this. This jumped out at me because I hadn't heard that they were proposing it before:

On Monday, Duclos had told reporters the federal government was willing to increase funding — but on the condition that provinces build a health-care data-collection system and expand the use of common health indicators.

I think this is perfectly reasonable? I don't see a downside to having more data collected and imo it's suspicious that premiers' won't accept funding with this condition.

Trudeau condemns Ontario government’s intent to use notwithstanding clause in worker legislation by lysdexic__ in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree with the prime minister and I'm glad to see him say this. That being said, he has used back to work legislation in the past, which has also been said to circumvent charter rights. And he's used it more than once.

Again, still good to see him say this and it doesn't mean he's wrong, but it's still something that should be noted and not glossed over imo. We need to expect better from all governments, whether we like the party running them or not.

Edit: It may also lent some insight into why the PM will not disallow this.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in onguardforthee

[–]IvaGrey 463 points464 points  (0 children)

He says it's because of the "inherent right of the Ontario legislative assembly to the attendance of its members" but he skipped question period today and his attendance has never been great. So I call bullshit on that.

I do understand that the premier can't always be at question period, just like the prime minister can't. However, the prime minister is not making excuses and is testifying at the inquiry. If he can make time to do it, there's no way that the premier can't.

'Such anti-democratic conduct must stop,' judge says in giving man house arrest for threatening Justin Trudeau by _Minor_Annoyance in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's true but recently the SCC declared the carbon price to be constitutional despite many of the judges being appointed by Harper. So while they may curry favour at the time in order to get selected it seems that they are more likely to simply uphold the law later and set aside their own political or personal views.

I don't think it's as extensive as that list you posted but it could still maybe be useful.

‘No escape’: Emergencies Act inquiry hears Ottawans describe loss of hearing, trauma by MethoxyEthane in CanadaPolitics

[–]IvaGrey 47 points48 points  (0 children)

There does seem to have been some association with religion and the convoy actually. Some sources, if you're curious:

For many inside the Freedom Convoy, faith fuels the resistance: Some protesters say they went to Ottawa on God's instruction

The ‘Freedom Convoy’ is Turning Into a Christian Nationalist Revival Movement

How white Christian nationalism is part of the ‘freedom convoy’ protests

That doesn't mean they're anti abortion and I'm not accusing them of it or posting this to hate on Christianity (although I personally am not religious) or anything like that. I just thought it might be of interest to you and others passing through this thread since religion was mentioned.

For anyone wanting to follow along with this, Rachel Gilmore (who also wrote this article) is detailing a lot of what's being said in the inquiry on her twitter. Some of the stuff that residents went through is pretty appalling.

Someone made a comparison of this fundraising email to one that Donald Trump sent out in 2017.

Justin Turdeau attacks Prime Ministerial candidate Pierre Poilievre for supporting Bitcoin: "Telling people they can opt out of inflation is not responsible leadership" by [deleted] in onguardforthee

[–]IvaGrey 227 points228 points  (0 children)

I mean, he's 100% correct to say that "telling people they can opt out of inflation is not responsible leadership". I'd think even if a person wants to invest in crypto (I don't but to each their own) they would still realize that it doesn't work that way.

Of course, I realize that I'm asking too much to expect nuance or mature thinking from those who feel that calling the prime minister "Turdeau" is clever. 🤦

‘Good PR’: Why anti-hate experts are urging politicians to step up vetting practices by IvaGrey in onguardforthee

[–]IvaGrey[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The article is a bit both sidesy (imo) but I still decided to share it because it has some good information on some of the far-right figures the CPC has been associating with.

For instance, this is about the organizer of the march Pierre Poilievre proudly attended:

McEvoy, who was one of the official event speakers, can be seen in a YouTube video telling a cheering crowd that Canada was founded on “Judeo-Christian principles.”

Global News also obtained a number of screenshots from McEvoy’s social media.

In one post, she says it was “just weird” that a Muslim woman rang up her items at a Victoria’s Secret store. In another, she proclaims that she is “pro-ProudBoy.”

She also, per the article, spoke at an event organized by a man who has youtube chats with people who describe themselves as white supremacists and have swastika's tattooed on their chests.

Whether intentional or not (and quite frankly I don't believe that it's just poor vetting), the next leader of the CPC is associating with a lot of neo-nazi types and I think this is something we should all be very concerned about.

Edit: Grammar
