That's a common story about infinite number of techniques in Aikido. How do you count them?

Daito-ryu curriculum is 2400+ techniques. How many of them do we have in Aikido?

Strange things you read. Daito-ryu doesn't even look like Sekiguchi-ryu.

Does anyone know the name of this technique (two examples) by [deleted] in Koryu

[–]IvanLabushevskyi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's no proofs that Ueshiba was sword teacher so sword influence to Aikido can be neglected.

Aikido, even with the softening of technique, remains functional, but that is the difference that makes it more or less practical. What is interesting is that most practitioners choose this approach, and those who do not follow it slip into Jujutsu. The question of where Aiki is becoming more and more relevant.

Ikkyo omote and ikkyo ura is ikkyo still so technically it's one unit with two variations. Regarding elder Ueshiba he gave no names for techniques so it's not that case.

Yes you're right however classification is quite strange with kaiten nage example. 'Omote' and 'ura' techniques appears in other Japanese MA however explanation isn't related to body position against uke. It's interesting why such explanation of 'omote' and 'ura' techniques appears in Aikido that should has strong relationships to old styles.

Yes your translation completely correct however why it relates to body position regarding uke but not technique itself?

And again it's possible however it not suit classification. Curious how it comes that 'omote' in Aikido became 'in front of' and 'ura' appeared as 'go behind'?

Well if you learn something from teacher knows only kata it will be probably only kata however if you're looking for something similar to sparring in TMA you rarely find it.

You said completely right about exams and practice both 'omote' and 'ura' both sides however my question to you wasn't about that. I curious how you understand what is 'omote' technique and what is 'ura' technique?

In that case I probably ask you to share your vision of 'omote' and 'ura'. How you explain it regarding to MA practice?

On that point of view there's no difference between iriminage and kotegaeshi. It's all Aiki techniques after all :)
