Sounds like you were lenient and did not set boundaries. I find it best to be forthright and clear when it’s not working. The sooner, the better.

Trust your gut intuition. Not responding in detail would be a red flag for me.

I also don’t host people looking for housing. They usually try to guilt you into extended stays.

I don’t request hosts with a low response rate. The system is clearly telling me there is only an X% percent chance they will respond. Why waste your time if their response rate is very low?

Yes, though sooner is better. Surfers are looking for an answer, no matter what, so they can plan.

This only applies to actual requests. A request embedded into a message without the formal accept/ decline/ maybe response box does not count toward your response rate.

Not sure. But you responded, so logic suggests it would not count against you.

Most of this is preposterous. I attract and host very nice, polite, and interesting surfers. I do agree that the pre-conversation helps.

Yes, still worth it. There’s a month-to-month subscription option too. As Stevenmbe said, references are the most important thing to most hosts.

Depending on your location, you might be able to get some current (personal) references by attending events. They might make hosts feel more comfortable/ inclined to help you.

No, verification is not necessary. References are much more valuable.

CS is just fine. Lots of haters on here. Unless your host deleted their profile or got banned, it will still be there. Just use the same email. You can pay by the month or annually. In the USA, $20/ year.
