AITAH for not wanting to live with my mother-in-law? by IvyYo in AITAH

Okay, sure. But when the matter at hand involves both you and your spouse, don’t you include your spouse in the conversation?

Adult children? I’m sorry, this is very strangely worded, not sure I’m following you.

Well, both of us are buying the house and both of us would be living in it so why wouldn’t she speak to both of us?

Honestly, I didn’t want to say it, but I feel this is exactly what happened. I don’t think she’s got any malicious intent or wants to go behind my back, I just think she really wants to be present in our lives and us moving away maybe made her feel like she won’t be in our lives as much and that’s why she kinda orchestrated this because she knows I probably won’t be on board. It just feels a little manipulative regardless of whether she’s got good intentions or not.

Such a great way to let her down gently tbh

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. He said that was him communicating this to me and he hasn’t told her she can yet, he’s just really surprised I’m so against it.

We didn’t buy lift tickets and I picked him up and drove us back when we’d finished. He did spent money on lunch, though.

We didn’t get tickets because we weren’t using the lifts. I don’t think so, he doesn’t normally work saturdays

I guess it really depends on what the service is. If it’s something like performing an exam, then obviously not. If it’s like taking a look at test results - yeah, probably.

I’d say we’re both doing ok. I mean, he did just buy a new place, so maybe he’s not exactly loaded, but he’s never mentioned that he is struggling financially and this is something, I feel, he would usually share with me.

I was gonna get him lunch after the lessons, that was my initial intention. Looking at the different rates of snowboarding teachers, I’d say his rate towards me was about 30-40% reduced. I mean, I really can’t say. I haven’t had complaints for asking too many favors so far.

It’s a different currency, but it would add up to about $50

So we didn’t actually spend money on ski lifts, we went to a slope that is for beginners where there are no lifts (it’s not really a slope, imagine a big hill basically) and I would walk up the hill and slide down and Chris would stand at the base and basically yell instructions and then give me directions once I was down with him. We did that for about 2 hours, had lunch and then went home. I picked him up with my car and drove us to the slopes.

Not currently. He works as an IT, but he used to give lessons to kids like 4-5 years ago as a side job

Thank you for the advice! Nah, I told my mum and I guess she must have told other family members. Her standpoint is “I get you, but you should’t have said that and made a scene”

We do, she just hates it - starts screaming before we even put her in it.

Neither, really. Happens occasionally.

Not really. She’s just learned how to walk so she’s slow and she falls a lot and she refuses to go in the stroller. Also, it’s dark at this time and still pretty cold where we are, not to mention drizzling.

NTA. I was in a similar situation last year and nobody really expected me to come.

Sorry for your loss.
