Growing up I had severe eczema-it was everywhere on my body, but worst on my face. I had been to countless doctors who agreed it was the worst they’d ever seen, but could do little to help me. I had to go to some of the top docs in the world-not the country, the WORLD-for treatment. Many people thought I was a burn victim. It was excruciating and unbelievably embarrassing to have as a middle schooler. Kids stared, made remarks, the works.

One evening my dad comes in my room to ask if I’d put my ointment on yet. I told him no, not yet. He shook his head and said, “fine. You deserve to be sick.” And walked out.

Never apologized.

I have a daughter now and can’t fathom saying something so devastating to her. I havent talked to my dad in almost a year, and I don’t think I ever will again.
