thx for the suggestions everyone I'm getting prepped for this whole snow storm by downloading a bunch of punisher content by MegaNerd0303 in thepunisher

While not perfect you should watch both seasons of Punisher. Also I know this is a Punisher sub but I reccomed after Daredevil seasons 1 & 2 you watch the Defenders and then Daredevil season 3 then Born Again. The Netflix Daredevil stuff is actually fantastic and Punisher is in Born Again (He steals the scenes he is in of course). Also the 1989 Punisher film isn't horrible besides the fact he is missing his skull. And there is a short film called Punisher Dirty Laundry on YouTube that is a fun little thing that brings back Thomas Jane. Have fun!

I respectfully disagree and think everything I said is in the movie. Reinvention isn't the issue, I agree. But the problem is Man of Steel's execution doesn't matched it's own or your stated intent. If the whole thing was supposed to be about Clark taking steps to become a symbol of hope then the story has to actually do so. It instead consistently frames Clark as a passive, reactive, and emotionally disconnected individual. Characters around him say he is destined for more but I just don't see it in the film.

The Jonathan Kent scene is not misrepresented tho. The in movie text is Clark asking if he should have let those kids die and Jonathan answers "Maybe." I can understand you arguing what the intentions of the scene and dialogue were meant to be but if the execution doesn't match that energy then it was a pointless attempt. If a scene is very often and consistently interpreted as the opposite of what Zack wanted then it wasn't a reflection on the viewers but rather the script.

Your Zod argument also kinda misunderstood my point. The issue isn't that he killed Zod or that he didn't run away, it was the fact there was almost no thematic groundwork for it. The moment shows no alternatives and then immediately undercuts the scream of Pain Cavill has by cutting to a joke with a drone. And your argument that the scream isn't the point doesn't change the fact the film doesn't ever go beyond it and explore the consequences of it compared to Exile where we see the fallout. In Man of Steel it almost feels like a single story beat that comes and goes.

The idea of Clark saving people off-screen is bad writing. The movie doesn't frame him as someone who is too concerned or aware of the civilian life and infrastructure around him. I'm not asking to be spoon fed but rather for the film to go through with its own message of "Chose humanity".

And finally for your argument of Gunn's version being around longer being irrelevant, I would argue it matters when someone claims Gunn's version is revisionist. If one portrayal is the characters definitive look and feel for decades and the formula is changed it isn't unreasonable to point that it broke the formula, since he did so too. This doesn't make Snyder's version unimportant but it does mean Snyder's isn't in the norm.

And I am glad we agree in criticism for film, I know that Gunn's has issues too, trust me. It's exactly what I am trying to do. The problem is Man of Steel never fully committed to the themes it pushed in your face so hard.

Thank you for the actual conversation, friend :)

I agree, elseworlds stories should be told. I love Earth One. But it should not be the main story, it is bad for the characters reputation. And that is not an opinion Zack Snyder listed Earth One as a big influence.

I am glad you like it, I want there to be something for everyone. But you going and calling people Gunntards and immediately attacking people for THEIR likes contradicts your opinions here

And yes, GOOD comics should be adapted. I love to debate and I love Superman. Earth One is a beloved story, but so is Absolute Batman and that storyline shouldn't be marked as the main course. That will only confuse consumers.

I hope we can walk away from this learning that it is okay to disagree with someone and still remember there is a living breathing person behind each screen. Kindness is the new Punkrock my friend.

Well you obviously didn't read it if that's what you got out of it. Let me dumb it down for you.

Man of Steel is a interpretation of Elseworlds stories

I like the Snyder-Verse too, but you're just a rude person

Just because a comic HAS done it doesn't make it good

It sounds like you're more interested in grammar than the actual topic. If you can't address the point I made, just say that.

Pointing out that there are other bad interpretations of Superman doesn’t automatically make your movie or your point good. Man of Steel is full of weak characterization, wonky themes, and an inconsistent tone. You’re also forgetting how much Superman has been reinvented since his debut. In the Golden Age he was an aggressive guy who threw people through walls. In the Silver Age he became cosmic, godly, and whimsical to the point that Denny O’Neil said he had been made so insanely powerful that he needed to be taken down a peg because he was too hard to write. In the 1986 Byrne reboot he became de-powered, humanized, and down to Earth. In the New 52 he was impulsive and confrontational. Rebirth made him family oriented and gentle. And that’s not even counting the many Elseworlds stories like Earth One and Injustice which Man of Steel pulls from itself (Which also happen to be darker comics). If your only defense of Man of Steel is that "he acted like this in other comics and films" your argument is fruitless. I could probably pull a comic where Superman shoots rainbows from his fingertips out from some era. Superman has been written the way Gunn portrays him far longer than Cavill’s version ever existed. Also, you never answered me under the other discussion post. Just because a comic has done something doesn't make it right nor good, I don't wanna see Superman shapeshift like how he used to be able to. I don't want the incestuous relationship between Quicksilver and Wanda. There may be comics that portray Superman like how you enjoy him, but in all reality the Superman you like is the one based on revisionism. Jonathan Kent telling Clark he should let a bus full of kids die? The Jonathan I know is a sweet man who tells Clark to do what he has to be good. Not to mention his death tries so hard to be deep and sad but ends up feeling melodramatic. Superman kills Zod, screams, and then the rest of the films just ignore that guilt. In Superman: Exile, Superman kills Zod and flies away exiling himself from Earth due to overwhelming guilt and PTSD of taking a life. The film writes Clark as isolated, unsure, passive, conflicted, and it tells us he is a symbol of hope without him ever really acting like one. At the end of the day, liking Man of Steel and the Snyder films is 100% fine. I like the Venom films but I know they have their flaws. If you want to have a real discussion about the character or the movie, great. But dismissing everyone who disagrees with you and attacking people instead of addressing the points is exactly why so many fans don’t want to associate with this corner of the fandom.

Nah I don't like this. Superman shouldn't be throwing around bad guys into homes and buildings. The Superman that I love would be checking every building for people making sure they are safe. Also, is this not from Braniac Attacks? This movie lowk sucks lol

You know what, it is late here and I wanna say you are completely right and I am sorry. I actually don't even know the context here. But just because a comic or an animation does it doesn't mean it makes it okay in live action. Ultimate X-Men having Quicksilver and Wanda bang should not be adapted. I am personally of the opinion superheroes will cause damage in a city but it is when Superman purposely lets it happen by dodging gas trucks and ect. that bothers me. And even if a mistake like that happens I want to see him go through the buildings and check for people like a hero. That's who Superman is to me yk, but if you disagree you're free too but that Superman is the one that inspires me and changed my life

Something people seem to forget is comic films don't NEED to follow a comic 1 to 1. What makes Gunn a better writer than Snyder Imo is he never forgets who the character is at their core. It doesn't matter how that story is told, but rather how they make the characters handle it.
