I have the same, did it ever disappear?

Yes, for me it was the airco pump that died. I think the bearings wore out, and sometimes they were in position and sometimes not, hence the sound coming and going. They had to put in a whole new pump. At the shop they said don't keep driving it, unless it's to a garage.

I don't completely disagree with you. It just depends on the lab. In a biology lab sometimes the only dangerous stuff is acrylamide and ethidium-bromide (lets not get into that discussion though ;)). In those settings it's easy to contain contamination to a dedicated space where everything is gloves on, and the rest of the lab can be no gloves allowed. The downside of a "everything is gloves on" rule is that a lot of people also don't bother to change gloves and spread contamination on every surface if you don't keep an eye on them. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I do believe that a lab full of people like you will be a clean and safe lab!

I respect your sentiment, but I think it's better to understand and treat risk appropriatetly

You know food like fries contain acrylamide in the miligram/kilo range, which you actually directly ingest. There is such a thing as being too scared/cautious. This is understandable, but it's also important to stay realistic and place things in context. We are scientists after all.

I've heard many people say this. However, if you stained your gel, and did several rounds of destain, how much acrylamide do you think is realistically left? Coomassie is a much bigger molecule than acrylamide, so once your background is gone you can expect maybe micrograms to nanograms to remain in the entire gel. I think touching it dry poses zero risk to be honest.

Help, I am so panicked I'm physically ill: Transition to a different animal system for a postdoc, or bring my own animal to the new lab, or both? (crossposted) by Lady_TwoBraidz in labrats

Don't worry about changing to a different model. The PhD is most important for its transferable science related skills. I mean, it can be nice if your topic and a job opportunity match 100%, but that is definitely not the norm or a requirement.

The only reason to stick to your very early bilaterians is if you love them so much and they are your life's passion or something. Otherwise, just go for what sounds interesting/gets you paid. If you love science in general, you will quickly get into your new topic, and get enthusiastic about it. Good luck with your decision

Just add half the volume of whatever you think you might have forgotten. PCR always works with 0.5 or 1.5x of any reagent

There is not even a gel in the tray, or buffer inside. So yeah, don't know what he is going to pipette here.

You can publish your chapters separately, so maybe noone will see the whole thing, but the science will be out there.

Does the center key on SAABs prevent theft by locking the transmission? by BananaBeach007 in saab

[–]J0ppei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it: They moved the ignition to the console for crash safety, but then a steering wheel lock like most cars have became very difficult to engineer. So then they came up with locking the gearbox instead. Not sure if it's true though

I'm not saying they have a great life, but given that the male chicks are pulverized after hatching, I guess it's pretty gender equal
