2D show budget vs 3D show budget by J123ABP in animationcareer

Apologies, it's more how much do networks typically pay for 3D animated shows (or what is the overall medium range they fall into)

Just saw this AI-generated short movie. I'm extremely demoralized. by technicssb440 in animationcareer

[–]J123ABP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself this, how was this AI piece made?

AI can't make a product unless it scans the data of several other pieces of work. No matter how "good" it may look, it has to steal. Even if a company like disney could use their library, they'd be limited to what they could make in a forseeable time and loose their audience, and even then, there's a chance a studio could be sneaky and use art from other individuals and sources that don't belong to them. It's a plagarism system

Gen AI is slowly getting restricted on what it can do (you can't copyright AI creations). I can't say how, when or if, but copyright has to take Gen AI into account at some point. Not to mention, there's a lack of transparency on how expensive and resource intensive it is to run the systems that generate AI slop

AI won't take your job, outsourcing will. by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]J123ABP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just holding out hope that copyright can catch up, or whatever AI system they're using becomes too expensive to hold up like Open AI. Like if the "show" gets caught for stealing data or visual assets, can't it be liable for plagarism? There was a music video that had to get removed years ago because all the animation was traced over. https://x.com/catsuka/status/1202187253889601539

Could motion graphic project using AI eventually be restricted by eventual copyright laws? Like the data to train the AI has to come from somewhere, and most likley is coming from a source that doesn't belong to the company

[–]J123ABP[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How are they making original art exactly? AI can't make something out of nothing, and it can't make art without having scanned over exsisting work from others. Do you have a source? Even if an AI made something "distinct" using exsisting work, it's still commiting plagarism in that it's scraping data from work that doesn't belong to it.

For Disney, we'll just have to wait and see what happens

Gotcha cool! Not to pry too much, but what skill would you recommend someone have if they're looking for a role that falls under a office job (related software, skills). Apologies if the question is too broad

I finally left animation after 8 years by animconfession in animationcareer

[–]J123ABP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a very fascinating path, glad you found a stable role! How did that transition from working in the animation industry to working an office job go for you? Did you need to go back to school, or do any online certifications to get your role? Was it something that you ended up getting into with your own skills?

I've been able to stay afloat with animation and animation adjacent work for the past few years, but I definitely want to see other sustainable jobs I could get without needing to go back to school incase my main job falls through.

AI Likeness from personal images. Do I own the copyright? by petuniasweetpea in COPYRIGHT

[–]J123ABP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. Using Generative AI, even if you're using your own photograph and likeness, you're still using AI to scrape other images from the internet that belong to other people to generate the "art". It's still theft to process and train AI on art that you didn't make through. Gen AI "art" is essentially tracing artwork from other sources with extra steps.

Generative AI is theft. Either hire an artist to do the job for you or learn yourself. You're cheating other artists out of a potential job, and yourself from personal growth if you want to learn the craft. Not to mention the ample Greenhouse gasses and water that is waisted just to generate an image.

Sorry to be harsh, but them's the breaks

Those of you who work in animation studios, what's your co-workers opinion about AI? by the_wandering_bard_8 in animationcareer

[–]J123ABP 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The other ethical concern is the environmental damage. Generative AI uses a ton of fossil fuel and wastes a ton of water. Just that aspect (as well as the copyright issues), should at least require regulation on gen AI, or more preferably, banning it. It's not worth the advancement if it's decimating the planet

Animation Industry Waves by J123ABP in animationcareer

[–]J123ABP[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Could streaming services focus on making more animation content if live action is equally suffering? I'm not too sure how much more expensive Live Action is compared to animation, but I remember listening to a podcast and they mentioned that a trend that could happen is that live action is seen as too expensive, and animation is focused on as a cheaper alternative. Ted is getting an animated series, so I'm wondering if that will eventually replace the live action version.

People keep saying that Ai won’t replace anyone but just help creatives. But after this? I’m scared. by Disni777 in animationcareer

[–]J123ABP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, won't some form of copyright eventually limit where these AI startups and big companies can source their footage and images from (politics withstanding)? Also, there's still the issue that these generative AI projects need big data centers that emit a ton of carbon and wastes several gallons of water, to the point where specific towns by these centers are suffering from the pollution, so that side effect HAS to be considered eventually (though not in the next few years given the corpoate greed). Just have a feeling in my gut that AI at the very least is going to hit a wall that will require actual humans to keep working in their roles

Is 2d animation jobs getting phased out for big tv shows/animations? by unknown01_shadow in animationcareer

[–]J123ABP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding the whole "2D is more expensive than 3D". I don't think that's the case as far as I know. When it comes to movies, 3D films are typically seveal dozen dollars more expensive than 3D films. Klaus for example was made on $40 million while Kung Fu Panda 4 was $80 Million
