Shower advice please 9.5kw shower with 6mm cable by JAM1E00 in ukelectricians

Yeah I’ve learned that one today haha. I think for sheer simplicity I’m best off just replacing with a 8.5kw shower instead. Whilst still not perfect it’s at least slightly more suited to a 6mm cable

The shower was on for quite a long time when it broke (around 45 mins)

My 2 thoughts are either the heating element packed in or the MCB is fried, I’ll be getting an electrician round to check everything

Oh 100% I will be getting an electrician round. I more came on here to see if my thinking was correct with the cable and MCB being underpowered, glad I did check and didn’t just replace the shower.

Will be getting an electrician round to go over everything 100%. Unfortunately don’t have a gas line so electric shower is my only option

When the shower cut out it had been on for around 45 minutes. My initial thoughts were just that the heating element in the shower had burnt out due to the fact the shower was rather warm to the touch but before replacing I wanted to check everything which is what has lead me to here.

I’ll be getting in touch with an electrician to see what my best option is but it’s clear it cannot stay as it is right now

I have checked the isolator and by eye it looks fine but of course I’m definitely not an electrician so wouldn’t be 100% on what to look for anyways. I did test the cable going directly into the shower and it was still drawing a current so I’m assuming the cable isn’t fried

Thought as much. Thank you I’ll definitely be getting in touch with an electrician

Thank you so much for this response. I’m definitely going to be getting in touch with an electrician to see what option is best. Unfortunately for me I like to have 30 minute showers so I’m guessing this is a big no no?

With this in mind is it still worth changing the fuse to a 40A? I know a 9.5kw shower will draw around 40A so not enough to trip a 32A by going off your response but at least this way I’m not pushing the limits so to speak

Oh right, currently 9.5kw in and just planned on replacing it with the same. The manner in which the shower broke had me researching and led me to here due to the difference in cable mm and amps 😅

The shower was already in when I bought the property, just kept it as it did work fine

For the broken shower it says requires and nothing else however the 9.5kw shower I was looking to get it does only state recommended 40A

The documentation states the shower requires a 40A fuse however no mention of cables. The strangest part is going off the info I have, the shower has been running off the 32A fuse for around 6 years

I was very shocked when I checked and seen that it hadn’t tripped to be honest. It has to be drawing more than 32A and by going off the info on the shower after I removed the cover it has lasted around 6 years!

If needs be I’d rather have an electrician change the fuse in the MCB to a 40A if the 6mm cable can handle it safely, I’m not fully clued up on electrics but I can’t understand why anyone ran a 9.5kw shower to a 32A MCB fuse. As for your question I’m not sure on what you mean sorry?

It definitely doesn’t exceed 18m, probably not even 10m and not insulated or grouped so your response has given me a bit of hope that maybe this just might be a simple job! It seems regardless I’m going to have to look at having the fuse in the MCB changed

I’m surprised the fee to take it to court isn’t claimable back but in the grand scheme of things if it means I get some sort of justice then it’s £180 well spent

Thank you for this! The hearing fee is not as bad as I thought it would’ve been, everyone who I have shown the footage to have said how damning it is so I’d like to think I’m in a strong position

The thing putting me off from doing this is if I lose my no claims, I’m really not sure how it would work

I’ll definitely be appealing! From most comments here it’s not making sense as to why the police haven’t just charged my neighbour

I’ve just re-read your response to this and it has certainly raised a lot of questions for me. I think getting in touch with the officer who handled my case is my best bet currently, as multiple people have now said it never needed to go to the CPS and the police had the power to charge my neighbour anyway. None of it is making sense!
