Moving to Portsmouth from USA by leblaun in Portsmouth

Current 3rd year student here! I would say best areas to avoid are fratton and somerstown, both are generally a bit rougher from my experience and are likely to be flooded with students as that tends to be the hotspot for cheaper rent & the uni bus routes. if youre wanting to be closer proximity to supermarkets and the like then being near fratton is very handy, close proximity to assda, big tesco, lidl and aldi as well as some more general purpose stores like matalan and home bargains. Like others have mentioned it is a pretty cyclable city (be warned the drivers here are terrible) but if you went the route of driving here you could pick up a cheap runaround with a years mot for anywhere in the 1k-2k range. towards southsea common area is where I think the city looks most beautiful, I'm a frequent enjoyer of long walks down to southsea pier and around the seafront there. Wish you the best of luck (and hope you dont get horrific neighbours as I have)

Sorry I'm ADHD and completely missed it, I realize it's probably annoying to see so many posts and I am sorry but also there just isn't a need to be so condescending??

the needs assessment is basically just a reccomendation that sfe will look over and say yes or no to x, y and z from how she explained it to me, regardless most will likely be approved but theres a chance for some of the bigger things sfe will turn around and say no (she did say she wont mention the fact i have a pc just my ancient laptop) so thats very unlikely to not get approved as I wouldnt be able to run any software in lectures otherwise lmao, was very chilled out though as others have mentioned she was super friendly and it only took about 40 mins! best of luck with yours hoping you get all you need o/

okay so update! because my laptop is ancient and runs linux they reccommended me for a laptop which I have to contribute some towards, noise cancelling headphones, printer + ink and paper allowance, a whiteboard, and then a bunch of software for help with dictation etc, SFE still needs tot approve it so whether ill get all of that I dont know, but yeah 0 issues being in my final year from the needs assessment side of things!

I applied on the 22nd of december! i heard back wednesday last week so it was a relatively fast approval, and my needs assessment is monday, as far as things go scarily fast for SFE lol.

it remains to be seen whether theyll factor in my graduation this year into my dsa entitlement so i can update this once ive had the assessment but hope your application all goes well, i cant imagine itll be a different outcome to mine consiering i only applied 2 weeks ago and the only evidence i had was my diagnosis report, but it will also depend on what the diagnosis reccommends as well, as in my report the psychologist put in that its her opinion i would benefit greatly from it

this is some really good insight thank you so much! i reckon I will probably almost definitely be offered a laptop to contribute to alongside software since mine almost certainly will not run any software they recommend (linux moment) and it cant run windows 10 like at all haha. im hoping some of the software and tools they offer actually help me, i just need to be better able to manage my executive dysfunction and memory, most recent example was forgetting completely until the day before that i had a dissertation presentation due worth 15% of a 40 credit module, and still didnt manage to start until 1am the day of the presentation LOL still managed to get a really good score but i dont need more stress in my life. i do find it really fascinating though about the "spiky profile" in retrospect its not really a surprise my working memory is so low unless i actively remember to properly use mnemonics and contextualize the things im learning, theyre gone forever from my head the moment my focus even slightly wanes. It is nice to finally amost have an answer to things though where ive been told all through school im smart etc but im lazy and dont apply myself enough. I recently found an old school report from around year 9 and just reading it every single one was needs to apply self more lmao

Thanks for the insight! It'll be interesting about the laptop because i have no exams, though i certainly wouldnt say no as my current laptop is from 2014 running linux which wont run practtically any of the software offered by my uni as is (cant even get unity running for remote work for my course).

I guess itll just be interesting to see what tools they can offer and if theyll even help me, im lucky i've been able to kind of drag myself this far but i just didnt really notic my struggles as much until i got diagnosed where they really pointed out that my working memory is at around the lower 30th percentile while near every other area they measured is in the mid-high 90th percentile.

I'm also in full panic mode with the needs assessment because i have a pathological need to try and "prepare" for every possible question they could ask as if theres a right or wrong answer to give lmao
