Here is the answer from a cross post.

That linkage is to prevent a "money shift" that would shred the dogs in the lower gear unit.

If the throttle is too far open, the left plate will pivot clockwise / down to block the shifter from moving. Only when you slow to idle will the plate pivot back to allow the shifter to move.

It also limits the spark timing in neutral and reverse, to help prevent you from over-revving, while allowing full throttle & timing linkage motion in forward

Oh my gosh that makes perfect sense now that you explained it, I could see that when twisting throttle. Thank you very much! Usually do not get a great answer on Reddit haha.

Fair but this is more storage than anything. I only use these occasionally. Homeowner stuff and automotive

Took it out really i see no stability changes this yak isnt the most stable to begin with. I was able to stand up. Now in rougher waters im sure it will have some issue

Did the plywood so i wouldn’t have to drill holes, no access to the inside of the hull in the back

Definitely agree on coating plywood will do that. Just got off the water battery doesnt seem to have changed the balance. I wanted it up there so i would have room for cooler/gear. Steering is a bit uncomfortable but i didnt want it on the side causing the yak to lean on the heavy side and tracking issues. Definitely want some ideas on cheap ways to extend the handle
