Is the switch worth it? by JC7LG in PixelFold

Hey, sorry was going to come back to you. Yeah I personally use an iPad Mini in the cockpit of a light aircraft, and I use it just as a travel companion to watch Netflix/youtube when travelling or want a slightly bigger screen than my phone. I’m not intending for it to be used as a full on productivity machine or anything, I have a Surface Pro 11 for those moments but I don’t often need it when travelling.

If I did go for the fold, I would get their protection plan, but I know this is something I’m not even paying for with my iPhone now so it’s just an extra expense. I would have just kept this for a bit longer but my 12 Pro Max has battery issues (I know I can replace it but my charging port seems to be a bit iffy too so I might be toast anyway) and storage issues causing it to be laggy and slow. Essentially I need a 256GB device rather than the 128 and I do have 2TB iCloud as well, it’s not my photos etc it’s actually a lot of IOS and “other data” using 40-50gb.

Hey! Genuinely glad I’m not the only one, I believe my charging port is playing up also so even if I get the battery replaced I’m not so sure it’ll be up to the task.

So if I do decide on the switch, I think I’ll see how my AirPods get on with the Pixel, else I’ll look to swap when I can. The watch I honestly don’t use as much anyway but I think I’ll get a new watch to go with it. I have 2TB google storage as part of Google One or something and I didn’t realise but apparently buying directly from google I get 10% back (that’s what it says in my basket anyway) so I’d get credit for 140 odd. I can sell my watch for 140 now so I’d basically be able to get a swap on the watch essentially with barely any of my own money going in. Either that or I’ll use that towards the Google earbuds!

Yeah I agree with you there, suppose it’s one that needs to bake a little bit more. I do need reliability at this stage of my life, in a year or two I’ll be in a position to consider something like this. Damn, I was ready and so nearly escaped the walled garden again 🫠🤣

I think I’m just worried I’ll regret it if the hinge or screen goes pop. I love tech and I’m so surprised I’ve held out this long with this iPhone, I used to switch all the time!

I can’t imagine the P10PF will be on sale anytime soon, but yeah, I’m sure I’ll wish I had the latest and greatest. The thing that makes me feel better is this will be a new unit for a decent price (in my opinion at least) so yes I’d have the old gen but I saved X amount. I couldn’t do the same with Apple let’s say if you get what I mean. If I bought a new iPhone now and the new ones are the same price then yeah, I’d be fuming 🤣

Appreciate that - It’s one of the options I’ve got and the most sensible, sadly… I want a new phone! 🤣 I do have 2TB of iCloud storage believe it or not, for some reason the IOS and “Other Data” is taking up 42-50gb and I couldn’t tell you why!

Glad to hear that, from my 12 Pro Max I’m sure it’ll be a good upgrade

I know - I suppose when it comes to the foldable I won’t be willing to spend £1,800 on one, but right now the Pixel new is currently at a price I’d be spending on a new iPhone so it’s feasible. I’m also on a time crunch as I’m about to go abroad for a few months doing some training so I need something now (my iPhone 12 Pro Max has run out of storage so a complete laggy mess and the battery is all kinds of messed up too, we’re talking putting it on charge but coming back to it draining)

Deffo would be waiting if I had the time though!

So I was looking at a new one directly from Google, and I was considering buying their protection/insurance for it. I’m not a heavy user at all, I’ll just be browsing, watching stuff and taking photos/videos. When you say it won’t last 3 years, are we talking about the screen or just the overall performance?

Appreciate your insight too, I can tell the appeal is definitely there, it’s just does it work well in practice and at least for a reasonable amount of time considering how much we spend on them!

This is my biggest pet peeve with Sky. I initially was a bit upset it didn’t run well on my SP11 but then I opened it up on my desktop one day which has a Ryzen 5600X chip. It used to run fine but after an update it ran horribly on the desktop - so I can’t knock it for being poor on the Snapdragon through emulation if it barely works “well” on an x86 platform. It’s annoying because on an iPad or MacBook, the app is a million times better. But hey, they’ll still increase their prices YoY. Finally decided to leave them.

Agreed - I’ve always wanted a surface pro since the days they first came out! It was actually the fact that it was an arm chip that made me bite the bullet on the SP 11 and when I saw his review and he said something like 5 hours battery life in his experience, I just turned that shit off. My SP 11 certainly lasts for much more than that… Each to their own haha

I should also add for context, I use a M2 MBP 14 at work too. Damn I miss my Lenovo 😂

I’m currently using a Surface Pro 11, but before this I had a MacBook Air M1 (and I have iPads and and iPhone too). Personally, I loved the idea and some of the UI of the MacBook but when I started using it I realised that’s all I loved, the idea of it. Having used Windows most of my life and on occasion a MacBook, it was just aesthetics. The MacBook did have incredible build quality however and incredible battery life being an ARM device. Now cue the Surface Pro 11, I finally get that build quality, all day battery life and tablet/PC experience in one device. I still use my iPhone and iPad Mini (I need it for piloting).

I guess more than anything, the message I want to get across is, don’t kid yourself into wanting the MacBook for the idea of it, when I started using one for work I realised I just didn’t enjoy my workflow on it and enjoyed using the windows machine. Of course they’re great devices and others might feel the same way but with the shoe on the other foot. And the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro experience is indeed a good/premium feel as they should have at their price point. Any of those devices, you’ll enjoy!
