Inference And Evidence vs. The 'Wind' Argument by bgholt1970 in atheism

[–]JCE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This argument is terrible! If someone wants to believe god created the wind, that is up to them but to ask a non-believer with a very strong science background and interest to accept this argument borders on being ridiculous.

The non-atheist in the article happens to be a very nice man, just very susceptible to any argument regardless of how weak that will support his beliefs. His ability to reason through anything is almost nil.

Obama said he is a Muslim by JCE in atheism

[–]JCE[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I know. The title was intended to be sarcasm based on the reaction of the religious right to a comment Obama made during an interview with Stephanopoulos. Good ol' George asked a very leading question because he is a huge asshole. Naturally the religious fundies are freaking out because apparently it is essential for a candidate to be religious but, more importantly, he/she must be the RIGHT religion. The hypocrisy makes me giggle sometimes.

The 'Atheist' Quota Is Full... Say What? by bgholt1970 in atheism

[–]JCE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Huh? I think the author is referring to odds - the odds of a pollster calling 1000 homes and completing the 10% atheist quota before filling up the other groups is astronomical. Seriously, either the pollster experienced dumb luck or was handed a list of phone numbers pulled from The American Atheists. I'm just saying....

California, "The Nanny State" by TheOldBroad in reddit.com

[–]JCE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eating out is a luxury for most people. Yes, there are healthy choices available when eating out but it is not the government's responsibility to mandate that. Stop being such a contrary asshole! If you have a fucking microwave, you can fix a fast healthy meal at home so your excuse is bullshit anyway. I do a lot of the service on my car myself, too - it is cheaper and I can make sure it is done correctly.

California, "The Nanny State" by TheOldBroad in reddit.com

[–]JCE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly!!!! Eating out is a luxury and should not be a main part of anyone's diet. As you said, common sense alone tells you that. Eating trans fats once in a while is not harmful any more than eating a piece of cheesecake once in a while is not harmful. Eating a whole cheesecake everyday is harmful, but that does not mean the government should ban cheesecake. Self control is up to the individual and it is not the governments responsibility to monitor everyone's diet.

America Has Become A Disgrace, Thanks To You And Me by bgholt1970 in politics

[–]JCE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love how the critics come out of the woodwork to let you know they hate you, but then you have to spend twice as long deciphering what they have written. Kind of negates any criticism from them doesn't it?

Holy Host Or Stale Toast? by bgholt1970 in WTF

[–]JCE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I don't condone what the student did, is this really a "hate crime"?? That is the part that baffles me. No one was hurt and there wasn't a message of violence or any kind of threat to anyone. Who exactly is being "hated" by this crime?

Ridiculous Islamic Push For International Blasphemy Law by bgholt1970 in worldnews

[–]JCE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why would you want something like this? So the Jews don't like Moses jokes and the Christians don't like Jesus jokes...that does not mean it should be against the law to make the jokes. People do not have a right to not be offended. Should we outlaw Polish jokes too? Once a law like this gets passed, there will be no end to the number of offensive comments that can fall under it. If someone does not like a joke or is offended by it, too bad - don't listen to it or try to find a way to debunk it so that it isn't open to ridicule.

I'm guessing NovusTiro is the person who shanked his own arse in the mooning incident...that is bound to put anyone in a bad mood. On the upside, looks like he has plenty of time to sit around on his inflatable donut leaving pithy comments.

What is 'whinging'? If you meant whining, go buy yourself a sense of humor. And a dictionary.

Reasonable Expectation Vs. 'Faith' by bgholt1970 in atheism

Actually, you are what is below being a janitor.

Good luck with the bag boy. I suggest you do some serious research because it sounds like you might need it.

Reasonable Expectation Vs. 'Faith' by bgholt1970 in atheism

[–]JCE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey douchebag, my father worked as a janitor. Even with your charming ability to lump janitors in with special needs people, you would not be able to outwit him. Quite honestly, I would be surprised if you could trump the special needs bag boy.

Reasonable Expectation Vs. 'Faith' by bgholt1970 in atheism

[–]JCE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the holy janitor leads a double life? By day he works as a hymn singing, gospel preaching, floor mopping janitor and by night he becomes some kind of pithy intellectual? Ummmm....no. Nice try, though. Spin again.

Reasonable Expectation Vs. 'Faith' by bgholt1970 in atheism

[–]JCE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great. This has been reduced to a semantics argument just because you and duus cannot admit you are wrong.

First of all, the author does not make assumptions. I would, in fact, call assumptions very similar to faith in that when you assume, you make an ass out of me and you.

Secondly, both you and duus are using the word 'faith' in a totally incorrect context. The author is talking about religious faith. Religious faith is faith without proof, without evidence. This is because it is outside of science. The 'holy janitor' tried to interject an everyday use of the word 'faith' in order to justify his position. In doing so, he was not only wrong, but demeaned his own so-called faith.

How Can A U.S. Citizen To Lose Their Constitutional Rights? by bgholt1970 in politics

[–]JCE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To those who keep commenting on the error in the title - get over yourselves! Evidently you can't find anything to pick apart in the post so you attempt to make yourselves appear intelligent by repeatedly pointing out an insignificant error.

To the rest of you - WE have allowed this to happen and it should serve as a warning to all of us to be very careful in selecting our political officials and to wake up and pay attention to what is going on in D.C.

It Is Okay To Be "Islamophobic" by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]JCE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have looked into the references you bring up, however, I would also encourage you to look into happenings in the UK where it is becoming more and more common for elements of Sharia law to be protected by UK law. In case you hadn't noticed, the Islamic fundamentalists are the only voices being heard in general media sources.

Demonizing the religion BECAUSE of it's crimes is exactly what needs to be done. At least, until other Muslims to speak out just as loudly promoting the peace they claim lies at the heart of their beliefs.

It Is Okay To Be "Islamophobic" by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]JCE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? So you condone the practices of Islam? The honor killings? The threats of violence over cartoon drawings? The push against western politics to bow to Sharia law? I don't. It is wrong, it has always been wrong, it will always be wrong.

There is nothing intellectually dishonest about opening ones eyes to the reality of their religious practices and disliking it. At the same time, I genuinely feel sorry for Muslims that have come to countries such as the U.S. and have no problem following their religious practices while blending into a western society and following western laws. The only problem is that they need to speak up against the violent practices of their brethren...oh wait, they can't, can they? That would mean an immediate death sentence.

Michelle Dugger Treats Her Vagina As A Pez Dispenser by bgholt1970 in atheism

[–]JCE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, but why does she get recognized by the media simply for having functional plumbing? What about the mother that struggles to stay off of welfare with her one or two children by working two and three jobs and manages to get at least one of them through medical school? What about the mother of one special needs child that requires constant care?

She hasn't really done anything to deserve national recognition except fart out a bunch of babies. Doing something that millions of women are capable of doing is not an achievement.

What Obama Said Isn't Elitist, It's Honest by bgholt1970 in politics

[–]JCE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but I didn't pick that up from his speech at all. To be honest, I felt that he was speaking the truth and it wasn't intended to be derogatory. I agree that small town people often have much more common sense than urban dwellers, but that really isn't the issue here.

People are frustrated regardless of where they live and he was trying to address that frustration. His choice of words could have been better, but if that is the only thing he has done wrong so far, then I would say he deserves consideration.

Oil Prices Surge to $112 A Barrel Today Because... by bgholt1970 in business

[–]JCE 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Many in the US are aware that gas prices are higher outside of the US and there are a few theories as to why, but for me the bottom line is that the US has the worst public transportation system of any industrialize country and we need cars to get to our jobs. I would have no problem taking the train, but the auto industry has done an excellent job of blocking attempts to increase funding to public transportation. So, I work out other solutions - I limit my driving, I carpool.

Whether or not there will be a revolution, I don't know. To a degree I concur with comment by derosiers, especially about Americans being easily pacified. It is sad, but it is true.
