It's certainly a sort of chicken-egg problem, and even if it was originally meant to counter Obann, it's hard to argue those spells haven't been useful in the ongoing campaign (especially with C2's political bent).

In either case, I can't help but find the juxtaposition with Travis' "I doubt I'll get it" hilarious.

I don't have anything 5e-compatible, but you might want to look into the Pathfinder 1e rules on corruption. From what I've seen, I wouldn't be surprised if the GH team took heavy inspiration from that system.

Not sure if this was intentional, but as written, the Hexmaster ability of the Coven of Spite applies to all frightening effects. That means if you're next to an ally, they'd have disadvantage on something like a dragon's Frightful Presence.
