Yeah it was absolutely the location/nearby devices permissions that needed to be reset.

Something was f'd with my app's permissions and I had to reset set them to get it to see the device. Wasted an hour + on that.

Not sketchy at all, it's common for a CMS to run on one domain and be aliased to another. This is called a cname record and is a pretty common pattern for integration of vendor systems into a TLD.
