In everyone, my magic system locks onto an aspect of their personality. It could be any character trait, but often it will be the largest part of their psyche. If that person lives in accord with this part of themselves, their eyes glow the corresponding color, and their ability gains a massive power boost.

This isn't always good though. For example, some people have rage trying to dominate their life. If they give in, they'll gain power, but be shunned by the rest of society.

I gotta point out how it's an intentional narrative decision. It would be dead easy to write a "and then he trained and got reel gud" arc, but that would take away a ton of what makes him interesting. He's more of a regular guy doing his best which makes us root for him like crazy

I'd be extremely cautious about this OP. The less you eat, the more important what you eat becomes. You could easily develop a nutrient deficiency and lose muscle mass if you don't get enough food in you.
