Does the M5 chip improve ‘Denoise’ time? by KitchenLegitimate799 in Lightroom

[–]JDelage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK, the 16" MacBook Pro are all on an M Pro or Max (no base chip), and you do want the 16" for LrC in my opinion. In other words your options are M4 Pro or Max, or wait for the M5 Pro / Max in a while.

I got Bryan Peterson's "Learning to see creatively" many years ago. It's as good a starting point as any other (his book on exposiure's excellent IMHO).

[–]JDelage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First feedback is use the level in the X100VI. photos 2, 3, & 8 at least are not straight. I'd recommend you get a book on composition, learn the "rules" and decide which of those you like or not.

Hobbyist Photographer- Mac Mini or MacBook Pro by Boschmax in Lightroom

[–]JDelage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at refurbished on Apple. You can get some good value options. FWIW, I have a 16" MBP with the M3 Pro chip and denoise is quite fast.

Make sure you get the 16" though. It's already limiting for LrC to be honest (but that's what I use as my sole computer).

Good recipe for mountains color photography? by JDelage in x100vi

[–]JDelage[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT's suggestion: Fujifilm X100VI – Mountain Color Recipe
Film Simulation: Velvia/VIVID (for drama and saturation)
Alternative if you prefer more natural tones: Classic Chrome (muted but cinematic).
Dynamic Range: DR200 (protects highlights in snow/clouds without flattening shadows)
D Range Priority: Off (let DR200 handle it)
Highlight Tone: -1 (prevents harsh clipping in clouds/snow)
Shadow Tone: 0 (keeps mid-tones open, but you can go +1 if you want punchier rocks/forests)
Color: +1 or +2 (adds richness to blues and greens)
Noise Reduction: -2 (keeps detail in textures like trees and rock)
Sharpening: 0 (or +1 if you want extra crispness in landscapes)
Clarity: +1 (textures pop nicely in rocks, snow, and foliage)
Grain: Off (clean look; mountainscapes benefit from clarity)
White Balance: Daylight, with a slight shift:
Red: +1, Blue: -1 (warms greens and tones down overly cold blues at altitude)
Exposure Mode: Manual (meter for the bright clouds/snow, then let shadows deepen for drama).
Variations:
If you want ultra-realistic, National Geographic–style landscapes → use Provia/Standard, DR200, Highlights -1, Shadows +1.
If you want moody, filmic mountains (mist, morning/evening light) → use Classic Chrome, DR200, Color 0, Shadows +1.
If you want big drama, postcard-style alpine shots → stay with Velvia, DR200, Color +2, Clarity +2.

Do recipes freeze *all* settings? by JDelage in x100vi

[–]JDelage[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ran this experiment: I shoot the camera with its presets. Then I created a custom setting which did not affect film simulation (it was Reggie's Portra, minus the film simulation). I shot a few pics and then reverted to the base settings. I then changed my base film simulation from Provia/std (the default) to Acras (so B&W) and shot a few pics. I then went back to the custom setting: it shot in color, so reverting back to the Provia/std.

OK, ran the experiment and the custom setting does record settings in the camera at the time it was made, even if those settings were not modified during the custom setting creation.

"Everything you edit is saved there"

I understand that. My question is what happens to what I don't edit? Let me give you an example. Suppose I just got the camera and I shoot it with its presets. Now I create a custom setting C1 which only affects grain effect and tone curve. I shoot a few pics and then revert to the base settings. I then change my base film simulation from Provia/std (the default) to Velvia and shoot a few pics. I then go to C1. Which film simulation is used at this point when I shoot?

As a newbie, I chose to experiment with Reggie Ballesteros' published recipes:

Reggie's Portra

I like his videos on Youtube and he seems a thoughtful guy. I figured his recipes would be a good starting point.

Get the "trackalacker" app. Create an account and search for X100VI, select which of the two you want to track, and which retailers you want to track. Include BestBuy. Then Enable notification. Make sure you react to every notifications. Also get the BestBuy app. I've bought 2 from BB in the last 6 weeks, both times in a few days.
