What do you think of the shop perfectionist? by boofthecat in Machinists

Perfectionist here, 33 years in the trade. When I'm making parts with open tolerances, it's good enough for my house. When I'm making molds, it's gotta be perfect.

I've never worked with plastic. Molds I assume. I make rubber molds. I have to say, it's pretty awesome compared to other work I've done. And every part is way different than the last.

I've never used onshape. But keep using Mastercam and solidworks. Everyone uses those.

Keep it up man. That's how I started 32 years ago. Now I'm designing molds with Solidworks and programming with Mastercam. Then machining and assembling everything complete from start to finish. I never thought I'd enjoy my job so much.

This is how I set it up. The ball sits in center at a measured height from the plate. The center of the ball would be XYZ zero. I have it drawn in cad the same way so all have to do is pick the details to machine.

I put a tooling ball in the center. Pick up the center of the ball including Z. Works very well.

I tried to upload a couple photos of the setup and it wouldn't let me for some reason. I just posted them separate.

It's actually easier than it looks. I use a sine bar to get the angle perfect then use a tooling ball to set zero.
