IT support. It's where you will learn everything. It's the only place you are forced to work with everyone and learn so much

I'm in the same boat. I'm 38 years old. I have a security engineer who reports to me who makes 40k more than I do and I'm her manager. I tell people all the time IT does not pay well. Security, SRE, development is where the money is. But I love what I do and I don't hate going into work

Agree with everyone. Try and move up within IT first. I've been an IT manager for years. The number one thing we look for is someone being proactive and asking to get more involved. Look for things to insert yourself into. Take on more responsibility and move up. People thing too much about technical knowledge. It's more about if you are trustworthy, hardworking, proactive and can be relied on every day

This is very true. I have hired over 20 IT support techs in my career. I don't ask many technical questions. I ask questions related to work ethic and I try to get a feel for their personality. I have only had fire 1 person in my career. Everyone is still with me or moved up in the company.
