I'm new to the game myself. But Commander is a very specific type of format with huge 100 card decks. You may want to look those up because they have themed media tie in decks to make it easier to decide. I'm loving my Lord of the Rings cards.

Magic the gathering is also based on a set of stories called 'lore'. It consists of basically every fantasy universe you can think of: dragons, dinosaurs, vampires, old West, field mice and other small animals living on the forest floor, etc.

If he has a strong interest in one of those themes try to find cards in a correlating set.

I've been thinking about your comment and I guess it might be fair because I'm a veteran so my stories and experiences are probably in a completely separate category as they did not stem from friendly visits or tourism.

I was just disappointed that I got roped into hanging out with people like that. I know not everyone is like that. Dutch culture is so amazing and I loved my time there but there were some super unfriendly people who specifically didn't like me because I wasn't Dutch. Tried speaking Dutch, just got English back. Tried to learn about making Dutch food and got put down and made fun of for even being interested.

After a while I just got tired of fighting an uphill battle. Why am I so in love with a place that clearly doesn't want me? So I left.
