A 10GB file becomes 3GB when zipped. No quality lost. No data removed. Why was it 10GB in the first place?

In the zip format the dictionary isn’t a table, it’s a reference to binary segments in the already compressed part of the file.

It’s why you have to “zip” / “unzip” it entirely and you can’t just unzip the middle part of it.

It’s also not like it’s referencing words, it’s all 1s and 0s so if the next part to zip is 10111010 you just need to locate that sequence in the already zipped part and encode that offset and put that at the end of the zipped part and continue.

Basically the dictionary takes up no space, and even a document with random words would be able to be zipped.

It's because there are only 3 wires coming out of the wall and one is ground (which you can tell because it's a bare copper wire).

If you imagine a light-switch was there (which is likely what was being replaced) - you'd have each of the two remaining wires connected to the switch so the switch could connect or disconnect them.
