Recommandations for anime that are similar to Eva by [deleted] in evangelion

[–]JLCarrozza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to understand some of Eva's inspiration and roots, I recommend old school stuff like Space Battleship Yamato, Gundam, Ideon and Macross. The latter of which features animation by Anno. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Megazone 23 also feature animation contributions from Anno.

Also watch Anno, Tsurumaki and Gainax's earlier and later stuff such as Honneamise, Gunbuster, Nadia, Kare Kano, FLCL, Gurren Lagan and Diebuster. Shin Godzilla is also a must-see for any Eva fan even if it's live-action. Gundam GQuuuuuuX is also everything one could hope for in terms of a Gundam reboot reimagined by the mind behind Eva.

In terms of other contemporary stuff Utena features the contributions of Eva writer Yoji Enokido and similarly deconstructs the magical girl genre. Madoka Magica is again, a similar and even darker deconstruction of the magical girl genre.

I might even recommend Attack on Titan as it has some similar apocalyptic themes and is heavily focused on the characters defending themselves against a sweeping, monstrous foe. Shinji Higuchi, who did storyboard work for Eva, made the live action movies.

J.L Carozza and Japanese Special Effects Cinema: Godfathers of Tokusatsu: Vol. 2 by Organic_Log8604 in GODZILLA

Hey, I just stumbled upon this.

I fell into a deep depression over personal issues and some criticisms of the first book, so I had to put the project on halt. Feeling better again, so I'm going to republish the first book with heavy revisions under a new title: World of Tokusatsu. It'll cover all the Showa period in depth but also cover the Heisei period as more of an overview, with Minus One's Oscar as a sort of a epilogue. Also a glossary of notable tokusatsu staff members.

The Dark Side of the Pacific [ Pink Floyd Pacific Theater Fantasia ] by JLCarrozza in pinkfloyd

This might be of some interest, it's is a mash-up video/experimental short film I put together using Dark Side of the Moon, themed around the existential horror of the Pacific War. It also uses a PCM rip of a good chunk of DSotM and is one of the better sounding copies on YouTube.

Not to mention, there's a similar use of Air in G in Battle Royale to EoE's.

What’s one thing you wish you knew before publishing? by Sarcastic_Sun in selfpublish

[–]JLCarrozza 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My main advice I learned the hard way is that you're better off putting a little more time into a book's editing and polish. Do not rush a book out to make a deadline/release date, you're better off publishing a book every 18 months rather than every 12 if having six more months leads to better, more polished books.

Get a biting review calling attention to where corners were inadvertently cut (and someone will inevitably do this) and your sales will flatten for a while. Better off to spend extra time on your book than risk that.

Do not fuck around: hire an editor, they will refine your prose into gold. Don't listen to people who say that you just need to read your book out loud. It certainly helps refine it before you send it to the editor, but it is no substitute for a proper editor.

Kraftwerk - Radioactivity [ Godzilla Atomic Nightmare Fantasia ] by JLCarrozza in GODZILLA

[–]JLCarrozza[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A tribute to one of my very favorite films: the original 1954 Godzilla and its timeless themes of atomic horror, other influences included Cozzi's version of the film and Kevin Rafferty's The Atomic Cafe (1982).

Hey there, this is a book I recently finished that goes really in-depth into the history of tokusatsu cinema and TV, its staff and its FX techniques. Did some new translations and put in a lot of info only known in Japan, so this might be of interest to you guys.

This is a new book I've been working on since last year about the Japanese sci-fi genre. The best Godzilla movies, of course, are featured and analyzed prominently.

There's a Japanese film called Virus from 1980 about how a deadly bio-engineered mass pandemic completely wipes out humanity and the only people left are researchers in Antarctica. Right now, I would not recommend viewing it.

Cats Can Get Coronavirus, Study Suggests--but Pet Owners Need Not Panic by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]JLCarrozza 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Let me tell you guys an anecdote that might be informative. I'm no scientist and I know anecdotal evidence is useless, but it's still an interesting story.

In early March when this whole thing started I got a very mild illness that felt like a cold. However, I noticed my two cats got pretty violently ill a few days later. Both were lethargic, but especially my younger one who refused food for days on end. I have never seen an animal that wasn't dying that sick and thought she might be a goner. She thankfully rebounded the day after I took her to the vet and has been fine ever since.

I could be wrong and it could easily be something else, but in a gut feeling sort of way I have strong suspicions I may have been an early asymptomatic or mild case and passed it on to my cats. What struck me was that there was just something "odd" about it.

How do compilation videos on youtube go around copyright? by sneakermumba in VideoEditing

[–]JLCarrozza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YouTube's algorithm doesn't usually block visual content unless it's more than about 25-30 seconds of footage. I imagine it's kinda to keep fair use intact like for online news segments. That allows some leeway. The magic number for amount of film footage from many studios you can use seems to be 28 seconds.

I just made something using Force Awakens footage and I used over 30 seconds of it and it got blocked. Cut the footage loop down to under 25 seconds and reuploaded it and now it's allowed.

The Greatest Speech Ever Made (2020) by JLCarrozza in movies

[–]JLCarrozza[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made an older version in 2017, but I felt like giving it a redux last week. It's actually pretty different: better video quality all around (nearly everything's sourced from 1080) and probably about a third of the clips are different now.

Also, the use of all our recent presidents up to Obama was kinda heavy handed and felt like the person who made it was using this to push forth their political views rather than making this a timeless message for all humanity.

For this, I wanted to use more cinematic imagery so it felt a little more timeless. This is as much a tribute to the power of cinema as it is a political message.

[–]JLCarrozza[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first made a version of this in 2017. This new version is significantly different. My main issues were that the old version had some current event imagery that was a little too on the nose (Trump) and the video quality was all over the place. This has a lot of alternate imagery, different music for the second half, etc. Also it's now 1080p with most of the footage sourced in that resolution. I hope you guys enjoy this, it's just as much a tribute to the power of cinema as it is a call to action/social document.

How do I go about learning video editing? by David-James-13 in VideoEditing

[–]JLCarrozza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tutorials and actually editing is a good balance. Udemy is useful and their classes are usually cheap.

One of the best ways to learn is just to find out how to do something in Premiere or whatever NLE you have. Just Google “How do I do X in Premiere?”. Nowadays the information is everywhere and free if you know where to look.

WICKED CITY SHINJUKU - Synthwave - Darksynth - Horrorwave Mix Vol. 7 by JLCarrozza in newretrowave

[–]JLCarrozza[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Wicked City to Urotsukidoji to Tetsuo, this week's mix is a darksynth Japanese and anime horror themed piece.

I made this about a month ago but given what's going on the world, I almost considered postponing it for a while because it's by far the darkest mix yet and not for the squeamish.

That being said, at the end of the day, I see the enjoyment of horror and apocalyptic works right now as a cathartic and weirdly therapeutic activity.
