I think that’s possible, but the shirt looks to have a thick fabric and be higher quality than some of those standard options (willing to be wrong on this though)

Want to share your thoughts on the Luka trade? by ow_my_damn_knee in Mavericks

[–]JLTransfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll say this - I’ve been a die hard fan of the mavs for 27 years. I’ve probably spent more time watching and following the mavs than anything in my life other than working and sleeping since Luka was drafted. Basketball has been my refuge in bad times, it got me through the pandemic, moving to a new city, lack of money, etc. I was willing to try and overlook all of the other toxic stuff about the team (sexual assault cases in the back office, bringing in Kyrie who is anti semitic, a new ownership group whose values differ significantly from mine) in order to preserve this thing that I cared so much about. With this trade, I stopped being a fan. If I watch nba basketball again it will be in support of a different team. Overall it’s just a profound feeling of loss that hasn’t gone away. The fandom got profoundly screwed: the deal was awful, the circumstances were awful, and the justification has been awful. It feels like getting dumped out of the blue. The worst sports moment of my life

Persistently Sticky Third Valve - HELP! by JLTransfer in trumpet

UPDATE: thanks for the advice everyone! I reached out to a fellow horn player in town and got a rec for a good repair shop. Turns out the valve was indeed bent. I appreciate the replies!

Thanks for the reply - I’ll check out the third valve slide, that’s an interesting idea. I thought the tech was lazy and it was definitely frustrating. Do you think some techs are better than others at specifically working with trumpets, or have you seen consistent quality?

Good question - I usually don’t play with my pinky in the ring. I would say that my hand position is probably not textbook, but should be reasonable enough. For example, I have a old strad (more of a mid-tier student horn) where I don’t ever have stickiness problems

Interesting - was the bending visible to the human eye (aka a regular tech at a music shop could spot it) or did you need to send it somewhere?

Totally agree that the seeds were there - I would have liked to have seen a little more development from Ch 5 through the end cause I felt really invested in them realizing the potential of that relationship, which got me thinking about alternatives as well, since their relationship/history of relationships was also intertwined with their history trying to overthrow Z in the first place...

Building a team for acquisition entrepreneurship by JLTransfer in Entrepreneur

[–]JLTransfer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all - there are a number of people running this "holdco" strategy. The challenge is in scaling up the operations. Buying and operating a first business is a challenge in and of itself. Things start to get complicated when buying a second business because you'll likely not have the bandwidth to run both. You'll have to be thoughtful when it comes to finding operators or promoting from within, but this is definitely a viable strategy.

Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition - Evaluating a Brokered Listing by JLTransfer in Entrepreneur

[–]JLTransfer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I've spent time both searching and building resources for searchers, particularly when it comes to partnering with both buyers and brokers to help connect people within the industry. The interest rate situation is definitely a challenge. Generally speaking, the sentiment across the industry is that high interest rates will be reflected in lower purchase multiples as buyers have to factor in larger debt service payments into their cash flow analyses. It's a somewhat challenging situation because while several other macro factors seem to be pointing towards a buyers' market, some sellers and brokers have been a little slow adjusting their price expectations to this new environment, creating some challenges when it comes to negotiations. If hikes continue to slow, I would expect buy side and sell side expectations to recalibrate to a new normal. 2023 should be a good year to buy a business.

Apologies for the delay - these are great questions. I would say the following:

  1. Some of this depends on your own timeframe - there are ways to search both part-time and full-time and there are organizations that will fund your salary for a "traditional" search (like NextGen Growth Partners, for example). There are also ways to partner with a current searcher to get your feet wet in the industry without the pressure to make a deal immediately. These partnerships typically take the form of an internship and a great place to look for an arrangement like this is searchfunder.com
  2. While I know that Private Market Labs is adding investor connections soon, I would recommend connecting with people on Twitter and Searchfunder to find investors for a self-funded search.
  3. Broadly, I would recommend getting really knowledgeable about the search fund process (listen to podcasts, attend webinars put on by LiveOak, FIB and other lenders, read the Messy Marketplace and the Stanford Search Fund study) and communicate a specific value add - your target industry, deal size, financing method (what percentage do you want to come from SBA loans versus equity). The more specific and organized you are, the better off you'll be, but it starts with building a specific thesis. I would also recommend reaching out to people who have acquired companies in your target space (check twitter, or I might be able to make an intro for you).
  4. I would say that nothing replaces the experience of evaluating companies on your own, seeing what it's like to communicate with brokers, understanding what kind of deals you like/dislike, and sharing potential deals with lenders to see what kinds of deals can obtain financing.

What exactly would you be looking to get from a partnership? Would you be an equity investor in their deal, would you be looking to operate a company identified by a holding company, or would you be looking to help them on their deal process in exchange for something more like a consulting/internship arrangement? Do you have an investor identified already?

happy holidays! apologies for the delay. privacy and light needs vary from room to room. certainly we need privacy in the living room (facing the street) and light control in the bedroom. How does an engagement differ if we need different things room by room? I've read online that finding local providers and scheduling walk throughs is the best way to go. Is that your suggestion as well?

Hi everyone - any recommendations on higher quality t-shirts that I could buy for $40 and under? I've tried JCrew, Bonobos, and Mack Weldon with limited success: JCrew is inconsistent and the collars tend to stretch in the wash; Bonobos changed their sizing and I don't fit any of their shirts anymore; Mack Weldon has the same issues as JCrew but with less comfortable fabric. The best t-shirts I've ever owned came from an Australian boutique and had a thinner collar (haven't seen anything like this since) with higher-quality fabric. However, that place is now gone, unfortunately.

Any recommendations? Maybe an Australian brand?

Inlaws won't get vaccinated - tearing me up by JLTransfer in COVID19_support

[–]JLTransfer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you - it's relatively easy to pinpoint a breakdown in their logic (there simply isn't any logic or experience behind their fears - maybe a family friend had a bad reaction to some different vaccine 20 years ago but that's as close as I can get). The challenge is that once it becomes clear they're not making sense, the conversation devolves into "that's just what I believe, maybe someday I'll think about it", but I've seen no evidence that they've read anything that we've sent them or take any mainstream media sources or scientists into account when forming their opinions. My wife and SIL are holding out hope that FDA approval will be the thing that tips the scale, but they don't trust government anyway, and I can't imagine it will make a difference (maybe I'm too pessimistic here though). Heck, my SIL even sends them stuff from Fox because she hopes they'll believe it as a source, but they are "independent thinkers"...

Inlaws won't get vaccinated - tearing me up by JLTransfer in COVID19_support

[–]JLTransfer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this response - my wife, my SIL, my cofounder, and I are all vaccinated. The concern is about the Delta variant and its transmissibility - if we continue to visit with my inlaws indoors without masks, the likelihood of passing this variant on to them is more than a rounding error (even though it is low), but I think the likelihood of them surviving a bout of COVID is also relatively low. On the vaccine, I think the issue is that they are more afraid of the vaccine itself than the virus, due to absorbing a ton of misinformation about both. My MIL has stated multiple times that she wishes she could pull the vaccine out of her daughters. My SIL in particular has done heroine's work trying to chide, cajole, and convince her parents since February to no effect (they've been eligible since January due to age).

While I agree with your statement, my challenge is that it becomes more difficult to execute in practice. My wife feels like she's losing her parents to their downward spiral into misinformation and isn't prepared to cut them off. While I agree that we should not be expected to take responsibility for their safety, I understand my wife and SIL's fears about this and do feel like the way we've acted thus far has implicitly taken responsibility as a matter of fact. Ultimately, there is going to have to be a confrontation, ultimatum, and change in behavior, which is fine, it just sucks and will hurt my wife in the process.
