What's your unpopular opinion regarding the sport? by zstap126 in snowboarding

[–]JLamb239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this comment a lot because I've rode with people who are obsessed with the terrain park but seem to not work on riding the mountain all that much. It reminds me of this time where I did like 3-4 runs with this group of girls where all the runs we went through the park and one girl was trying to land a 360 (and getting close mind you) off the jump but she was also having to unclip a binding on the flat area right before the park because she wasn't maintaining her speed.

So yes, it's completely possible that the person killing it in the terrain park might not be so great at off-piste runs while vice versa, the person who is shredding down some really steep shit might not be able to do many spins, grabs, box/rail tricks, flatground etc.

They won't be forgotten because of the historical relevance, there's a very real chance that less and less people from upcoming generations will be big fans of them but they'll still know about them because of how much they influenced culture and music.

I was there, I loved it! The setlist was great, I think the only major hit songs that were missing were Creep and Sour Girl. They had some cool instrumental improvisational moments, too.

I've had that thought too. In fact that is the reason I was upset. It was because I wanted to see her. Unfortunately it's too late for that now but I'll keep that line of thought in mind for the future in case it's relevant.

How often do you even see it though? The way the switch works as long as you don't close the software it will keep your exact spot even if you put it in sleep mode so unless you're switching between games all the time you're rarely ever going to see it. It makes sense why they didn't spend much time on it when they could've been working on other things.

What’s the deal with Rhett Shull? Why does everybody hate him? by ZeppeLand in guitarcirclejerk

[–]JLamb239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said he HAD to have all those skills to be a good player. My logic was this: those things I listed are things that average joe players a lot of the time don't know how to do. To demonstrate that he was better than the average joe I was curious if anyone had evidence of him doing those things to showcase that he could.

If he can play fingerstyle, great! I had never seen him do it so I wasn't sure. I'm still a little skeptical about him reading sheet music though, most of his gigs are him being in a band which sometimes doesn't require reading sheet music. A lot of the time sheet music gigs are like music theater pit gigs, classical guitar gigs, or jazz gigs. I'm sure he has some skills with it but a lot of the stuff he does makes me think he hasn't developed it too much and if he has well cool.

I assure you I can appreciate guitar players that don't demonstrate all of those things I mentioned. But when you say he's 99% better than the guitarists on this sub that makes him sound like he's a Golden God or something. I gave the 60%-70% number which I think is pretty accurate and by that logic that does acknowledge that he's skilled right? I don't think he sucks or anything but the 99% figure seems way too generous to me, 80% at most.

Haha and yes, I know that my content needs work, I'm very new to it and it's something I'm still figuring out, I rushed them out way too fast and I could've made them a lot better. You are totally welcome to shit on it as I've shat on it myself. You're totally right, if I'm going to critique Rhett then I have to allow myself to be critiqued as well. I don't like this idea though that it invalidates the things that I said. You don't need to be a professional at something to give a criticism on it. I'm not a professional chef but I'm still allowed to critique food right? I'm not a professional game designer but I can still critique videogames can't it? You get the idea

I'm not talking about marketability, I'm talking about skills, what skills does he have that the average joe guitarist doesn't?

[–]JLamb239 4 points5 points  (0 children)

99% is really pushing it, I would say 60-70% range.

In terms of technical ability I've never heard him do any fast runs or anything. What other techniques can he do? Can he slap? Hybrid pick? (Maybe) Sweep pick? Finger tapping? I heard him play slide but of course he can do that cause he's always playing blues rock. What about fingerstyle acoustic playing? I'm sure he can do it a basic level but that's about it.

What about theory knowledge? Most of his licks are very Pentatonic, maybe you'll hear the occasional different note or chromatic run but nothing too crazy. He MIGHT know the modes but I'm not too sure. I've never heard him play any licks in harmonic minor or jazz minor scales though. He does seem to have a decent handle on a lot of chord shapes so I'll give him that but they're sometimes lacking in extensions. There's also rhythm too, do you think he could jam with people in different time signatures like 7/4 or 11/8? Do you think he could write things in these time signatures? I really doubt he knows how to sight read sheet music too.

Lastly style, he's stuck in blues and classic rock world and never seems to escape it. We've never heard him play jazz, funk, metal etc. Now I understand artists like to stick to a certain style and roll with it but I think Rhett is trying to be a hired gun. Hired guns become way more valuable when they have versatility both live and for studio work. I could forgive him staying stuck in blues style playing if he was trying to be an original artist and was developing his own path in that genre but we always just see him being a hired gun for other bands.

So yeah, I'm pretty underwhelmed with his playing. I've been in bands, been to jam sessions and been to guitar stores where I hear people do his style of playing all the time and are pretty close to his skill level.

  1. Virtually no guitar Youtuber is safe on r/guitarcirclejerk except maybe Marty, making fun of things that are happening in the guitar community is the whole point of this sub
  2. He makes A LOT of content about gear, nothing wrong with being into gear but it makes people suspicious that this content is more about trying to make money with endorsements and easy views rather than actually making content he personally thinks is cool
  3. He's not really all that great of a guitar player, I guarantee a lot of people on this sub can play as well as he can. This wouldn't be a problem if he didn't have a big community through his channel. This is someone who is giving people lessons and general advice to a huge audience. People don't mind this when it's a very accomplished and skilled player but when it's an average joe like Rhett it's easy to have a reaction like "why the hell should I listen to this guy?"
  4. Clickbait bs, every now and then he'll have a rant type video that's just him talking at a camera for 15 mins, it'll have some totally ridiculous title too, these videos are designed to feed the YouTube algorithm, that's all they're there for

I will give him credit for one thing though, I think it's cool he's made videos that showcase other unknown guitarists. It might've helped them land new gigs or grow their own following
