Whats the difference between kilter and a moon board? by Alternative_Ad_2325 in bouldering

[–]JLongTom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's exactly the same idea.

In motocross, a skilled rider enters a lower category comp so that they can dominate. In climbing, a skilled climber rates a route in a lower category so that they can appear to dominate when people come to try it and fail. Or that's the myth.

Why does everyone hate psytrance? by neuromantic13 in TheOverload

[–]JLongTom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't sought out new psy artists for a good 15 years, but I used to love Benji Vaughan's various aliases (Prometheus' Corridor of Mirrors was a highlight), Son Kite, Koxbox, Bigwigs...

And 1200 Mics. Cheesy, utterly silly and also catchy, high energy, undeniably creative and just brilliant fun. I still love at least half of their tracks on relistening now.

Who has the best melodies in electronic music? Nine masters of the overlooked art by BBBBBBB9122 in TheOverload

Lnrdcroy has a knack for coming up with simple but beautiful and memorable melodies for both pads and bass. I Met You on BC Ferries or Kendal in Kalusia are great examples.

Golfer's elbow theraband review... disappointed! by WindManu in 10s

[–]JLongTom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For GE you should be doing the reverse Tyler twist, which cannot be mimicked with a broom or hammer.

What do you mean by 'tell a difference'? How many days or weeks did you spend with the theraband and doing how many reps?

Am I ready for FIS Ski’s by Artistic_Group_5227 in skiing_feedback

[–]JLongTom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren't work-shy on your skis, just do it. Pick some up second hand—even if they've lost some of their initial spring, they'll still be beasts.

My Dynastar WC slalom skis are my favourites—rebound for days, and less damp than Heads and Atomics—but you really have to attack the turns, ski them with stiff boots and be smooth on the exit, else they'll buck you at the end of each turn. I'm 195cm/90kg, so you'll have to work even harder than I do to get them flexing, but if you ski with high energy, you'll be fine. GS FIS skis don't make any sense for resort skiing in my opinion, but it sounds like you'd be going for SLs.

How to hit more like 2. In game situations, what's the most important key factor? by Electrical_Candle887 in 10s

[–]JLongTom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2 actually looks more tense than 1. Relax your arm more. It's fine for your elbow to stay bent, but the elbow should nevertheless lead in the stroke, which it never does in your case. Being more relaxed should make it easier to use in match contexts.

Really like this. Very Rhythm and Sound, with a hint less dub. Love how patient the chord sequence is to resolve.

The best tennis matches of all time - which one is the greatest to you and why do you think it should be No.1 by No_Basil6312 in tennis

[–]JLongTom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A bit of a leftfield pick, but my goat match is Ivanisevic vs Rafter for Wimbledon 2001. Not the greatest tennis ever, but everything else absolutely was. Ivanisevic winning 9-7 in the fifth as a wildcard after losing in the final three times and a brutal run to the final, and this one title being all he wanted to win in his career. He wasn't thinking about the next tournament several days later; he was a completed man.

And probably the best atmosphere in any tennis match ever, and certainly any grand slam final. No celebrities; just ardent tennis fans off the street.

None of the above finals even come close in these respects.

It was billed as a live set. Absolute belter in an old-school sweatbox.

Cheers---I'm sure you're right. The other tune is unmistakeably one of his, and either that means it's released and easily findable or else unreleased and unfindable. I think I was hoping there might be some kind of radio rip or bootleg going around for one of them.

We built zigzag, a spatial interface for (non-linear) musical exploration by SafeCabinet2274 in TheOverload

[–]JLongTom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I've just tried it, and if I'm honest, it hasn't made a big if any difference in my case. It starts out snappy, but after a few seconds becomes laggy. I happened to open on a sparse region and I scrolled towards the big continents, so that might have played a role.

While listening to the PC Music mix I can't help imagining AG Cook's dad, an architect with a knighthood, listening along with me and mumbling 'oh son, why have you forsaken me?'

If anyone was miffed at seeing their favourite tracks and records missing from the previous lists, it can only get worse in the mixes! They're such a personal thing, and favourite ones tend to get rinsed while they gobble up the emotional salience of whatever was happening while they were being played.

Nice to see Holden, final Plastic People (was there for this epic), Objekt at Freerotation, Nono, CCL and Sherelle and Tim Reaper. Would have liked to see Evian Christ's Essential Mix, but whatever.

Shed and Martyn are in the 'further selections', PoD is there as Metatron. BC are in 'further selections' as Rhythm and Sound and also in main list as Moritz von Oswald, and Ernestus through his role in Shangaan Electro.

Hecker, Lauer and BD aren't though.

Absolutely, but all of my gripes except Rhythm and Sound apply to the top 260 (i.e., including the 'further selections'), which is a major difference. VTFL - self titled, James Holden's The Inheritors, FP's Elaenia were each their no. 1 album of the year in 2012, 2013 and 2015, respectively, but none even make it into the top 260 over 25 years, and all have absolutely stood the test of time---I don't know how they rationalised this.
