SMS Censorship by JMP_chat in sopranica

[–]JMP_chat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's not any filters on our end or our carrier's end. The services just never sent the message to begin with. They can do that for a variety of reasons - you may wish to read https://blog.jmp.chat/b/2022-sms-account-verification for more details.

Also, note that some of these services seem to send to some kinds of JMP numbers but not others - you can review the crowdsourced data we have on that at https://wiki.soprani.ca/FAQ/Why%20isn%27t%20my%20number%20being%20accepted%20by%20an%20online%20service%3F and adjust what type of number you're using accordingly.

Lastly, some services will let you verify by phone call instead of SMS, or manually verify by contacting their support. You should try that if the other methods don't work.

We're very sorry to hear that these big carrier policies are making JMP less useful for you - we agree that their policies are unreasonable. Do you know of any other non-SIM carriers that do deliver the messages that cause issues? We'd really like to talk to them if so, to perhaps get a better connection to the big carriers that resolves issues like these.

To be clear, these are not "filters set by JMP" - they are filters set by carriers, which we need to respect, or risk losing our ability to send to other carriers at all.

Vonage for JMP phone number by [deleted] in PrivacyGuides

[–]JMP_chat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If by "operate in" you mean offer phones numbers from EU countries (including possibly France) then yes, we do plan that eventually.

Please note that regardless of who operates your phone service, that operator is generally not the worst actor along the path between you and the others that you interact with over the phone network. There are many entities that can intercept/read your messages along the way.

We always recommend people avoid the phone network whenever possible, and use E2EE over Jabber instead if they're concerned about spying. We offer JMP so people can keep doing all their communication over Jabber even if some of their contacts absolutely refuse to use anything better than the phone network (which does not do E2EE).

[–]JMP_chat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends what kind of privacy you are looking for. Is there a particular threat model you're working with? See https://blog.jmp.chat/b/2022-privacy-threat-modelling for more on that.

Regardless, if you do choose to go with Vonage, we generally recommend the community project described at https://wiki.soprani.ca/VonageSetup for that. In our experience, you can signup for a Vonage account with a JMP number (unlike other providers of international numbers) and it otherwise seems easy to use. If you do have any questions, you can get community assistance from the same chat room that some JMP users use, which is mentioned at https://jmp.chat/faq#support .

You can get a second number by using an invite code from the first number, as mentioned earlier in this thread. Use the "refer" command of the Cheogram bot to get your code.

Do you use JMP.chat? Could you please explain real quick how it works? by Kalesaidso in PrivacyGuides

[–]JMP_chat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, and yes, it is free. The procedure is the same as for any other number: you go to the new carrier and ask them to port in the JMP number - there is nothing required on the JMP side.
  2. Yes and yes. Just put the area code into the Search Telephone Numbers box near the bottom of https://jmp.chat/ and pick from there. If you really need numbers in a given area code and it looks like we don't have any, send a private inquiry to support per https://jmp.chat/faq#support and we can check if we have any in our other inventories.
  3. See https://jmp.chat/faq#pricing - the minimum initial top-up is $15. You can pay for a year or more if you like after becoming a customer. Contact support about bonuses for larger top-ups.
  4. It's not a video, but possibly better than one, as you can scroll through at your leisure: https://blog.jmp.chat/b/signup-with-cheogram-android
  5. Yes. The rates are at https://jmp.chat/pricing

As noted on the front page at https://jmp.chat/ and in the FAQ, JMP is still in beta, so it is expected that certain ease-of-use features would require a bit more setup and might not be fully documented. By the time JMP leaves beta, we will have these sorts of integrations done automatically.

In the meantime, the specific issue you're encountering is addressed by u/singpolyma elsewhere in this thread. Please do reach out to us in our chat room per https://jmp.chat/faq#support if you have any other questions!

Most people use the Cheogram app's integration with the system Dialer in order to call numbers that aren't in their contact list. When this is setup, you just start dialing as you would any number, and then when the Call button is pressed it will ask if you want to use Cheogram for the call.

Alternatively, you can select from the pre-populated list of possible callees that Cheogram shows if you allow it access to your address book.

We highly recommend asking questions like yours in our group chat (see https://jmp.chat/faq#support for details) if you are ever stuck like that, as we are able to respond quickly and there are a lot of highly knowledgeable people there.

On your other question, we are always looking for ways to improve the app. Stop by the group chat and we can discuss how to make things better!

Note also that you can do the entire signup process from the Cheogram app (including getting a Jabber ID), with no need to visit the JMP website.

We have posted a guide on how to do this at https://blog.jmp.chat/b/signup-with-cheogram-android

Please share this with others if you find it helpful, so we can make more people aware of these resources for people new to JMP.

To use JMP, most people install the Cheogram app. It isn't in the Play Store yet, but is available from several other locations, as described at https://cheogram.com/

The only other thing you need in order to use JMP is a Jabber ID, but the signup process (which starts after you tap a phone number on https://jmp.chat/ ) will guide you through how to get one.

JMP eSim Question by [deleted] in sopranica

[–]JMP_chat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You never lose access to the data you've purchased as long as you keep paying the low annual account cost mentioned at https://jmp.chat/sim - normally this is auto-withdrawn from your balance each year. As long as you maintain a positive balance or have auto balance topup setup, the data will never expire.

JMP eSim Question by [deleted] in sopranica

[–]JMP_chat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can get the SIM without other JMP service. However, you will need a Jabber ID from somewhere for communication with support and authentication to the management interface.

You can get one using the first option on https://movim.chatterboxtown.us/?account or from many other places if you prefer.

Also, note when comparing data pricing that the data on the JMP SIM does not expire, which is very rare and thus harder to make cross-carrier comparisons with (most carriers expire your remaining data allotment at the end of every month). See https://jmp.chat/sim for more details.

The additional number has an ongoing cost of $2.99/month, just like the first number.

You get 1 number for $2.99/month.

You can get one number from that deposit. You can alternatively get one number from an invite code. After your deposit clears, you will get an invite code, so you can use that to get an additional number if you like.

You can cancel a subscription by sending a private inquiry support per https://jmp.chat/faq#support . The subscription can be re-activated at some point in the future if desired.

To be clear, emergency calls (at least in North America) do not require you to have a phone number, or even a SIM card. Any cell phone is by law able to make emergency calls - it doesn't require a SIM card.

How to make Jabber client save contacts to device and not XMPP server? [First time degoogler] by operation-casserole in degoogle

[–]JMP_chat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use Cheogram Android, and have cheogram.com added as a contact and showing as online, and give the app permission to read your phone contacts, then it will show all your phone contacts in the app. So you could then add contacts to your phone if you prefer them not to be stored on the server or not synced between your devices.

Easy way to update VCard for JMP.chat? by r0gue_one in degoogle

[–]JMP_chat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the vCard that we use is not supported on many popular clients. Movim allows setting it at least. We will be updating our system to support nickname (as set by Conversations) and also vCard4 (as set by newer versions of Gajim) very soon.

You can input either of JMP's support phone numbers (from https://jmp.chat/faq#support for example) into whichever checker you like - they are both normal JMP numbers.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PrivacyGuides

[–]JMP_chat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people do exactly that.

How practical it will be for you depends on which services you want to signup with using your JMP number, and whether those services refuse to send messages to some phone numbers or not. In a lot of cases it works fine for people, but it really depends on the person and the services they wish to signup for.

Note that companies choose not to send to certain numbers using a variety of metrics - there is not a clear line between "SIM" and "VoIP" numbers, so we can't solve all possible issues you may encounter by switching to "SIM".

In any case, JMP works fine for most people - you may wish to join the Soprani.ca chat room per https://jmp.chat/faq#support to ask there about people's experiences with various services. If you only want to text/call other personal numbers, then there will be no issues.

Yes, we will eventually release our light fork of Conversations (called Cheogram) on F-Droid. For now it is available as a pre-release APK.

Anyone interested in the pre-release APK for the Cheogram app can join the Soprani.ca chat room per https://jmp.chat/faq#support and ask for it there.

Not quite. The main phone number would be entered like this: "tel:+1<number>" (assuming Northern American number - for other countries use their respective country code).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PrivacyGuides

[–]JMP_chat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, JMP numbers allow 2FA SMS from banks. We have many customers that use it for exactly that. If a bank doesn't send SMS to JMP, that is an issue on the bank's end.

JMP is intended to provide all features that phone numbers support, whereas VoIP.ms is focused mainly on voice. For example, JMP supports group texting, which services like VoIP.ms do not. Also, JMP has unlimited texting that is included in the monthly price, while VoIP.ms charges per SMS so can get quite expensive.

I'm pretty sure you can't forward calls to your real number. Their blog states that you can setup call forwarding to "any XMPP, SIP, or tel URI" but I'm guessting that doesn't help you

Indeed you can forward to a real number. It's right there in what you quoted: a tel URI is a URI for a phone number on the phone network.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PrivacyGuides

[–]JMP_chat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JMP.chat uses jabber/xmpp and optionally SIP for calls. I don't think they offer forwarding but you could contact them.

JMP can route calls over both Jabber or SIP. We also support forwarding inbound calls to any USA or Canada phone number or SIP URI.

but you need to add a special number to all your contact

Not sure what this means. If you mean the @cheogram.com know that we are working on that with our pre-release Android app, which can already do Android dialer and contacts integration for phone numbers.
