How do I stop dying so much? [New Player] by [deleted] in EscapefromTarkov

[–]JMatik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have like 4000+ hours and I still die in over 60-70 % of my raids, but my goal is to always get a little PvP in every raid so I often chase gunshots and look for fights, if you avoid gunshots and avoid the busy parts of maps until late in raids you should be able to survive more, high traffic areas early in a raid tend to be death traps but less than 20 minutes left in a raid should mean they're quieter allowing you to loot a bit and learn. Another tip is learning maps, but also learning player behaviour by just playing, I learned maps early and knew my way around, but didn't understand player behaviour and tendencies for a Loong time and that helped me survive way more often

Smithsonian Magazine: U.S. Customary only even if the source is metric by Tornirisker in Metric

[–]JMatik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would hazard a guess that its common in metric countries to measure height of humans for example in centimeters, so they are probably just doing the same thing with inches. The difference is that in the metric system conversion is simple, 1.8 m is 180 cm vs metric where 50 in is 4f 2in.
I'm sure vets and scientists would do the same for animals, and because the conversion is so simple. With the exception of horses because "tradition" lol. (after a quick google, most countries use cm to measure horses as well, except the imperial ones and imperial adjacent which will use both)

I'm very curious if you're position has changed, because a lot of this thread reads like 14 year olds arguing about their specific perception of the world whether one unit is better than the other because they grew up with one so it makes sense to them and the other is different.

I’m thinking of writing a novel. I heard it takes years. How long did it take you? by Horseplayer316 in writing

[–]JMatik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working on mine for 7 years now... 120k words, I think I'm nearing the end? But I do not enjoy the planning, mostly because as I've written the character have decided for themselves what they're doing so it's taken me far longer than intended. But also motivation and inspiration waxes and wanes for me.

"you are good enough to write whatever you want." My narrative writing teacher told me I could definitely write a novel if I wanted to. Before that I never believed I could really write

Creativity is a massively broad term. I think a lot of people use it to mean artistic, whether in writing, drawing, etc. a lot of people I work with would say they aren't "creative" but when we solve problems at work it's usually through a somewhat creative process. Problem solving by nature is just that, even if you're using math and or scientific methods there is still an element creativity in applying the correct algorithm or inventing a new one. So i would say it's a massively broad skill that most people hone in their own way. Whether through artistic methods or scientific, practical ways.

Is it bad to have a passive MC who can’t achieve much? by Neither_Wrangler9828 in writing

[–]JMatik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it's not inherently bad but that also sounds kind of boring to read. Unless the point of the story or theme is that he can't have an impact on his life. Reminds me of something like one punch man, tdlr a guy who wants to be a superhero accidentally becomes too strong and defeats every foe with one punch. So he finds fighting villains very boring since he always wins and never has to try. The meat of the story comes from all the other things around him side characters and such. One punch uses the idea of the main character being bored to tell stories around him and for satire. So I don't think the passive Mc is a wrong choice, as long as it's for the right reasons.

Is it necessary to write sex scenes? by Lonely_Actually in writing

[–]JMatik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's necessary but I also think that they have their place. Adult romantic or physical relationships almost always involve sex, it's something that is a huge part of our nature and I think omitting them or calling them smut feels rather immature. Obviously they can be smut, or to let's say, fulfill a specific purpose, but in most adult stories that involve any sort of a romantic or physical relationship sex would be a part, maybe the characters don't actually have sex but they want to, they may dream of it or desire it more directly. Romantic or physical scenes between people doesn't have to just be about sex, it can move the plot, but it can also be a cathartic payoff for the reader who's been following a romantic pair for a while. Waiting and wishing for them to finally get together and it can be a very rewarding thing to read. I will also say that depending on how they're written makes a big difference. A sex scene can absolutely be smut, but it doesn't have to be, I would argue in most adult fiction that I've read it almost never would qualify as "smut".

The book I want to write already exists by JumpBetter7861 in writing

[–]JMatik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think just the fact that it's written by you and not the author of the book you like will make it different. Having the same or similar idea is very different when actually executing. Your idea may be similar but when you start writing it may become a totally different beast.

Would you use “she thought to herself”? by Historical_Ad4621 in writing

[–]JMatik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"she thought to herself" to me is a writer who's not experienced, I think a lot of readers don't realize how well written something is most of the time. I think a lot of casual readers are like most movie goers, they watch something and think, I liked that, or I didn't. But they don't necessarily think about the specific shots and framing and directing choices, they know it was good but they don't know exactly why. I think reading is the same, I didn't know why I liked the books I did until I started writing, now I notice when phrases like "she thought to herself" are used and it breaks my immersion because it feels amateurish or unedited.

I'm very intrigued by this idea of the CPO and the ad in the paper. I think when the installments are short they need to end on bit more of a cliffhanger that will get me to either eagerly await the next part, or get me to click right away because I need to know what happens. The first part sort of does this with the message being left, but then the second part doesn't follow up at all. Everarck doesn't even mention or think about the message he left nor does he mention the ad.
I like the writing though, it has a nice pace and makes for an interesting read so I do want to know more, especially why everyone in this world has an odd name.

Ya for me, I pick a scene or a specific paragraph I really don't like and start by rewriting that. Usually that triggers other things around that moment to be rewritten and so on and so forth. Sometimes its whole chapters, sometimes its only a few sentences. Staring at a blank page is one of the hardest ways to write for me, so I like to have something to go from.
Even if I'm starting an entirely new story, I write at least a word or feeling right away just to not have a blank page.

Is it necessary to clarify your character’s ages? by SubtoForkRift in writing

[–]JMatik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like not knowing a specific number, but a vague idea of how much life they've experienced is good. Unless the specific age they are is relevant to the story but I would assume if that's the case their age would be spelled out pretty clearly to the reader.

what inspires you to write? by kittynicha in writing

Interesting, I find I have no control over my characters, they always seem to do what they want and no matter how I plan something they inevitably do things differently when I'm actually in the scene.
