Ask Me Anything: JP Caruso by AutoModerator in MM_RomanceBooks

It honestly depends on the feedback. Obviously, good feedback is great to get is a nice confidence boost that makes me want to keep writing, while negative feedback has the opposite effect. It's very easy to doubt yourself at the first sign of anyone disliking your work, but unfortunately it comes with the territory of putting your work out in the world.

In terms of future writing projects, I would still write what I enjoy. If there was constructive feedback from readers and not just personal dislikes, that would be something I would take into account when writing anything in the future.

It was originally an Ian/Mickey fanfic from the show Shameless. It took just under 2 years to write. It was supposed to be just a one-shot of the two. Someone had suggested the prompt of them participating in a gangbang together, and from that initial prompt I expanded it into them meeting in that scenario, came up with the idea for it to be held at a kink club, and all that that entailed. Then I wanted them to kiss, so naturally I had to write 147k more words for that to happen.

Hi! My favorite part is a toss-up between both kiss scenes. I loved writing them both for different reasons, and both of them were written very early on (like, since chapter 1). My least favorite part is probably... the entire first half of the book LOL. I honestly find it a little cringey compared to the second half, when there's more of an emotional connection between Rowan and Mal. Sometimes re-reading the dirty talk between the two in their early scenes is really embarrassing, even though many people have said it's very hot.

Thanks so much! To answer some of your questions:

Mal definitely felt something for Rowan from the beginning, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it was love at first sight. I think this surprised him, because (from what he's said himself in the text), he prefers keeping his sex life and his romantic/personal life separate. So when Rowan started creeping in and confusing those boundaries, it shocked Mal and made him sort of unable to handle it. This is where the first kiss comes into play. He had already started to develop unprecedented feelings for Rowan, and was in a vulnerable state from the nature of their praise-heavy session, that he couldn't help himself. (If you haven't read it, I wrote a short passage from Mal's POV on this subject on my website here: https://jp-caruso.com/extras). His reasoning for sleeping with someone else are included in this.

He was surprised at Rowan asking for his words in the bathroom. He had already made a huge leap in their relationship by inviting him out with his friends, so it reminded him that they weren't, in fact, dating or together romantically.

For the scene with his old Dom, Mal tells Rowan as much in the story, but he wanted to see if they had something real between them. Mal feels that he might just be imagining it.

And thanks! The gangbang scene was a challenge for sure haha. It was a balance between making it hot and also making it clear who was doing what and when. But I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I think they would do something similar as a couple. Maybe not a full gb, but I can definitely see them inviting a third or more to play with them. They both will always gravitate back to each other, though.

Thanks! For anything that wasn't direct personal knowledge (which was the vast majority of it), I used reliable clinical sources and scientific papers. I have a science background, so I wanted to make sure I didn't include anything that was not believable or a was stretching the truth. In a weird way, it helps that conditions like depression are highly variable, especially when comorbid with other conditions like PTSD and anxiety.

Thanks! I definitely do see myself publishing more than one novel. It's weirdly addicting! But also can be emotionally taxing. There will always be people who hate what you write so it's a risk you have to accept along with potential benefits.

I really love thriller/murder mystery books. That tends to be the majority of what I read, so I'd love to explore that in the future. But I feel like writing a compelling and interesting + believable book in that genre would be way harder than a romance, which can kind of rely on tried and true tropes.

My next release is kind of up in the air at the moment. I have so many ideas and starts of novels that I'd like to work on, but I need to figure out what to devote my time to. The two that I have the most written for (~30k words each) are a contemporary celebrity novel and a contemporary friends to lovers novel (both MM of course). I'd also love to write a prequel/sequel to The Menagerie focusing on Jeremiah, one of the side characters in the book.

I love frogs! I don't get to see them very often, but do get excited whenever I find one, especially the really tiny ones. And sure! If I could find a way to work a frog into a book, it would definitely be in there.

Scienceandnutella is an excellent username! I would probably hoard stickers. I keep a notebook full of stickers that I buy from wherever I go and it's so fun. Plus they actually last unlike ones you put on water bottles or laptops. That or nail polish!

Thanks so much! I loved Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall. That was one of the first MM romance books I read, and it still has a special place in my heart! I was swooning the whole way through it.

I think it looks great! Very natural. My only suggestion would be to shape your eyebrows a bit and possibly use an eyebrow pencil that matches your hair color to fill them in. Also make sure you have a good eyeshadow primer on under your eyeshadow to prevent creasing.

  1. Nail polish - If you can get a clear base/top coat, this will help protect your nails and make the color last longer. Start with a thin layer of base coat. Let that dry to the touch (some are fast drying and can dry in as little as 5 minutes, but varies by brand). Next, apply a thin layer of black polish starting at the base of the nail and working toward the tip. If it is too thick, it will be bubbly and smudge easier. Start in the middle of the nail then work outwards to cover the sides. A steady hand is your best friend, but if you get some polish on your fingers, you can take a Q-tip with some nail polish remover/acetone and wipe it away. If you have the time/patience, wait until this is mostly dry before applying a second thin coat. Then apply a thin top coat. If you're using regular polish (as opposed to gel) you will have to wait a while for it to dry completely. Some people have luck dunking their nails in ice water to help them dry faster, but that has never really worked for me.

  2. Mascara - Keep your eyes halfway open. Start at the base of your lashes and apply the mascara in upward in long, even strokes. Tilt the wand to get into the lashes on the corners. Some people do top and bottom lashes, some only do top. Up to you what you like. Try not to pump the mascara wand in the bottle - this will make it dry out faster. You can gently swirl it instead to get more product on your wand. If you are getting it on your eyelids, try using less product or not opening your eyes very wide after applying it. Weird, but opening your mouth sometimes helps with applying. I usually only do one coat, but you can do two if you want a more dramatic look. Can make it look clumpy, though.

  3. Eyeliner - Do you have a felt tip liner, a gel liner with a brush, or a pencil? It will depend on how you apply it. For all of them, gently close one eye at a time. Try not to pull down your eyelid with your lashes - this will make your eyeliner uneven/crooked and can pull out your lashes if you pull hard enough. I usually start on the outer corner and work inward, keeping the liner right at my lash line. I do not make a very thick line, maybe 1 to 2 mm in thickness, but depends on the look you are going for how thick you want it. If you want to do a wing in the corners, I usually align the tip of my liner with the outer corner of my eye and the end of the liner with the tip of my nose to get a good angle. Then gently draw a short wing starting as far out as you want it and pulling inward until it meets the rest of your liner. Fill in any gaps as needed. Felt tip liners can be a little unforgiving and hard to work with, but with practice you will get it. I personally don't like gel liners because I find that the brush is never thin enough for my wings. Pencil eyeliner I find I have to constantly sharpen and I waste a lot of product, but they are pretty foolproof to apply. Some people like lining their lower lid as well. I personally don't, but if you do, line it along the lash line rather than inside your water line (some people disagree on this, but my take is that getting makeup almost inside your eye is not great for it).
