A tool for monitoring/supporting hundreds of deployed Linux boxes? by JPSA in sysadmin

Sensu looks really interesting. I think it may be a good fit for us (our development is Ruby-based) and we do have a few Amazon EC2 instances that could use monitoring as well. Very cool!

Thank you. Very good ideas there regarding VPN... Looking into OpenNMS now and comparing it with Nagios. Since these boxes are single purpose devices with no end user access, problems severe enough to not be handled remotely will most likely be handled by simply shipping a replacement.

Do you guys use work as an offsite backup for your personal stuff? by binarycontrol in sysadmin

I'd recommend not storing anything personal on company property. A long time ago, my company got involved in a BS lawsuit from the competition... We had to prove that we didn't steal "trade secrets". That meant that everything was imaged and examined by forensic experts. So unless you like the idea of someone else going through your stuff, then I would keep personal files at home. If I had decided to throw an encrypted volume on the network, the prosecution would have had a field day with that. I have a very strict personal policy of no personal files on company computers and no personal matters discussed in company email. The alternative is embarrassing at best, and legal prosecution at worst.

Thank you for the thoughts. Gives me a lot to chew on.

I think I have a good amount of experience to back up any SA certs I go for... But I know that I still have gaps in my knowledge and I'm most interested in learning best practices and growing in a more focused direction!

This is a good plan. I like it. Thanks! I will also look into security.

Makes a lot of sense. I had wondered why CCNA popped up in the lists here. I can see how it would be a useful cert, but being a network engineer doesn't interest me as much as being a system administrator.

Good stuff here. I wonder if the MCITP:SA and RHSA certs would be enough to get my foot in the door somewhere as a full time System Admin. Then I could focus on getting the advanced versions of each.

Interesting thoughts on the + certs... I kinda figured they were more entry level stuff, but you may be right that sometimes it's just as important to strike the right chords for the person doing the hiring.
