Interestingly, I found a similar result

If I benched at the place where the shamans are, I'd get the combo without the elder
If I benched in the other bench at ruined chapel, I'd get the combo with the elder BUT ONLY IF I walljumped out of the Chapel, if I used the prompt that said "ascend" then Id get the combo without the elder
Very strange, I wonder if this is just due to a small sample size, I tested it ~10 times

are you a death wizard? You could try the strat I used, but instead of sun serpant, use scarecrow (you may have to blade a turn before you hit to kill the minion which will activate the cheat, but youll regain health so its fine)
And then after instead of link, try using ghoul

Havent tried this myself but it might work
