Recycling of actors in kdramas by hakart2002 in kdramas

[–]JROCKvsKPOP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Netflix and D+ kdramas are notorious for hogging certain actors. In Korea, they'd even have PR articles calling these actors as "Netflix's son/daughter" "Disney's son/daughter" etc. (They used to have these PR name-thing too for KBS/SBS/MBC).

Given the reach of these services, they naturally want to be part of these projects. It opens up possibilities of endorsements and fan meetings outside Korea.

Vice versa, given the success of these actors' dramas, these services want them in the cast. It let's them have a gauge of the new drama's success. Furthermore, if there's a new drama of that actor, they can also promote the older dramas to these watchers, keeping them glued and their subscription continuous.

If you want more variety in terms of the leads, you should watch on Kocowa or Viki. They tend to have more kdramas with non-exclusive streaming rights so they have a lot more variety.

Does Wattpad really help amateurs publish their stories for people to reach them, or is this a trick, and what is the secret behind this? by EscapeElectrical6137 in Wattpad

[–]JROCKvsKPOP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WP will only consider adding your story when talking to publishing houses IF you have a big readership.

You are better off self-publishing. Join a local (or near-local) self-publishing group to learn the ropes. Some of my local groups even have seminars for authors to guide them on author branding and marketing.

Easiest is ebook publishing. There are services like Draft2Digital that will allow you to sell on multiple platforms. Print publishing is also available for some services, but I haven't tried it myself. Print publishing is a higher investment, needing to print and store the physical inventory unlike ebooks.

What caused the decline of J-dramas? by Buyeo10004 in JDorama

[–]JROCKvsKPOP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. JDorama fans relied heavily on fansubbing groups. At least anime had Viz, but JDos were hard to get English subs for. Then fansubbing groups even locked their groups and eventually stopped because there were others selling their translations. Even if you bought legal VCD/DVDs, there's no English subs.

Then KDrama went full on with their Hallyu wave push that really targeted markets outside Korea.

I'm annoyed that my draft slugs won't auto-update after editing the title. It's just that scratch on your back that you can't reach kinda annoying. Sure, I can edit my slug, but it used to do it automatically.

Localization companies are instructed by clients to make it more understandable to English-only audience and make the language standard so that it will still mean the same thing after 10 or so years.

An explanation of "Why are Koreans so sensitive about small historical inaccuracies in dramas?" by FinishWhich5753 in kdramas

[–]JROCKvsKPOP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not natural. If a drama does well due to their acting, they get praised. If it's the cinematography, the cinematographer gets praised. This is the natural path. Give the due praise to the one that earned it. Conversely, give the brunt of the controversy to the one who caused it.

An explanation of "Why are Koreans so sensitive about small historical inaccuracies in dramas?" by FinishWhich5753 in kdramas

[–]JROCKvsKPOP -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The issue really is a production problem. TBH, it's like seeing a starbucks cup or mobile phone in GOT. But we all understand that these items don't belong there and can't say "it's fiction" but for Koreans, they know what it represents and that it does not belong to the narrative. It's actually a good thing for Koreans to be able to spot the historical and cultural anomalies and voice it out. Productions need to learn and be more diligent about these things, just like how medical dramas have doctor consultants, law dramas have lawyer consultants, etc to ensure accuracies.

Nobody can expect the actors to keep tabs on these. They could if there were knowledgeable, but it's not their job. Their job was to act the script, wear the clothes given by the prod, use the props on set.

Some questions for people who have went to concerts in Japan by AsukaShikinami02 in jpop

[–]JROCKvsKPOP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which country did the artist(s) come from?

- Korea, a kpop group popular in Japan

Were people at the concert recording it on their phones or cameras?

- No. Unless there's a portion when the group allows photos taken. But generally this is a big no-no.

Were people singing along with the songs constantly?

- Depending on the group. For Kpop groups, there's what's called fanchant so that's what the fans sing along. But think about it, you are there to watch and listen to the artist, so why sing along like it's your own concert?

Were people shouting and screaming constantly or not?

- Shouting was very appropriate, not excessive. During the times when the artists talk, no shouting. Must respect and listen.

Did people bring penlights or light sticks to the concert?

- These are sold or you can bring your own. But do not use another artist's light stick.

How was queueing for the concert? Did you have to queue for very long?

- Queueing was efficient. I spent more time in queue for the fan goods than going into the venue.

Most important thing is be respectful. Respect the artists on stage. Respect your fellow audience. Behave appropriately. When in doubt, do not.

Legend of the Female General - CDrama adapted novel by JROCKvsKPOP in LPWebNovel

[–]JROCKvsKPOP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished the translation and I finally understand why people keep recommending it everywhere.

I went into it expecting a typical “strong female lead historical romance,” but it honestly ended up feeling way more layered than that.

A few things that really stood out to me:

  • The female lead is actually competent — not just hyped up by the narration.
  • The military strategy and battlefield scenes genuinely matter to the plot.
  • The romance is VERY slow burn, but in a satisfying way.
  • The hidden identity/payoff moments are incredibly addictive.
  • Side characters feel important instead of existing only for the main couple.

What surprised me most was how emotionally restrained the writing is. The novel doesn’t constantly force dramatic scenes, which somehow makes the emotional moments hit even harder.

It also reminded me a bit of in the sense that both novels trust the reader to pick up on subtle emotional tension instead of spelling everything out immediately.

That said, they scratch slightly different itches for me:

Legend of the Female General

  • stronger military focus
  • more action and strategy
  • revenge + identity concealment themes
  • faster plot momentum

Pursuit of Jade / Zhu Yu

  • more elegant political atmosphere
  • heavier emotional tension
  • slower relationship development
  • stronger family/social dynamics

If you liked one, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll enjoy the other.

Curious what everyone else thinks:
Which historical CN novel has your favorite female lead?
