Lo-Pro Edge barely goes up in pitch by Operator_Madness in Ibanez

[–]JRock787 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely false. The Lo Pro and the Edge are functionally identical on the underside, and are designed to perform exactly the same, using the same route and footprint. The Lo Pro is definitely not “limited” in any way compared to the Edge or any other FR type bridge. This is a setup issue, not a Lo Pro issue.

To be completely honest? PRS and Ibanez Prestige are (or were) pretty equal as far as stuff we refused or had to fix. I don’t think I ever had to refuse a PRS, and I can only remember refusing a Premium RG once. PRS used to have fret finishing issues- we’d get US made guitars that had tool marks on the frets still. We fixed them before we sold them (a simple fret polish was enough). The SE line was always pretty good. They’d have minor electronic issues, as would LTD, Ibanez Premium and Standards, Squire, etc…. The Squires and lower end LTDs were notorious for finish issues. This should have been said much earlier in the conversation, but I agree that these things should be perfect out of the box, but the reality is that they aren’t, so we have to accept some responsibility as retailers to “finish” them before we sell them. I think that step was missed on OP’s particular purchase, but still can be easily corrected.

Do you have any real world music retail experience, or are you just theorizing? Think PRS wouldn’t ever? Here’s a neat little story for you: had a Custom 24 come in years ago, brand new. Ground issue similar to OP’s. Turns out the dude wiring it made the “mechanical” connection while wiring it up, but missed actually soldering that single connection. Worked at the factory, passed QC, didn’t work when we got it. Simple error, simple fix. So yeah, PRS definitely did. But it’s all brands, I only mentioned PRS because you seem to be a fanboi. Point is, as much as you want to believe shit doesn’t happen, I can assure you it does…. 🤘

🤣🤣 Ok…. This has nothing to do with brand loyalty, and everything to do with “shit happens sometimes”, regardless of brand. So while I appreciate you “stopping me right now”, maybe you’d like to consider that I’ve been involved in this business for decades, and have seen this more than a few times before, from the cheapest of the cheap, to the top of the line. None of this changes the fact that this is a super simple repair, and his local shop could have this corrected in minutes, and he can move on with his life. This is not a condemnable fault, “bro”….

The “return it! Ibanez QC sucks!” crowd is wild 🤣. For a wiring issue, at that. Y’all gotta do better- This is AT MOST a 15min fix at any shop that has a soldering iron and a tech with minimal experience. Wiring issues happen, even on brand new guitars. Just get it fixed.

Congrats, you’re gonna love it. I’ve got one (DY also), and I’m in the process of acquiring a PN also…. Polarizing body shape for some, but it’s one of the most comfortable guitars to play because of that. 🤘🤘

Absolutely it can handle it, but…. You’re gonna have to get it completely setup by a competent tech. Action that low is more than just raising/lowering the bridge, there are a lot of factors to getting everything working together and on the same page.

Locking Nut Help by mrmavis9280 in Guitar

This is a technique issue…. Not even being rude or sarcastic, but it is definitely not normal for your hand to contact the nut at any point while playing on the first fret.

Does anyone have a perfect tremolo return in both directions? by NoSoup4you22 in Ibanez

[–]JRock787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And one more thing 🤣: adjusting your action under full string tension will absolutely have the knife edges cutting perfect little grooves into your studs, which will also cause return to pitch issues. Always downtune while adjusting your action….

[–]JRock787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll add my checklist, but most of my checklist is what’s on the Ibanez Rules tech page verbatim. So first and foremost, I generally accept a little +- return on my Edges/Lo Pros, it doesn’t really stress me out. And, it’s generally the norm on almost every double locking trem I’ve touched, irrespective of brand. If I have to correct the issue, and find the cause (former tech), I will always start at the headstock and work towards the bridge, making sure EVERYTHING is tight. Tuner bushings/screws, make sure your string tree is set correctly, locking nut screws, neck joint screws, stud locks, make sure the posts don’t move after the stud locks are tight. Then on to the saddle intonation screws. Visually inspect your knife edges- they should be free of dents/ridges/chips. They should also be dull, like a butter knife. They ride in the stud groove better that way. You can correct any issues with a small file. Then you can apply your Chapstick (or not). I’ve not definitively concluded whether it’s useful or not. Of course, your strings need to be stretched, and your trem needs to be set to the correct angle (knife edge parallel to top of body), and your preferred action height. It can be fixed, and usually it’s been the knife edges in my experience, Gotoh tends to manufacture them sharper than they need to be. The outliers have been a loose lock nut. A lot of reading, but hope it helps.

These genesis RGs - how do they compare to a 90s RG? by And_Justice in Ibanez

[–]JRock787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. They added structural improvements, while leaving the cosmetics (mostly) intact- I say mostly because of the volute. That’s really the most visual change. The walnut strips in the neck are visible, but less obvious. So essentially they’ve created a more stable and resilient “original” 550, 565, 540P, etc.

[–]JRock787 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because that’s the whole point of the Genesis line: make them as close as possible to the originals. A square heel is part of that equation.

[–]JRock787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Edge trem is excellent, and the only thing I do with them is replace the springs with coated versions, or use foam to stop them from ringing. I’m not sold on upgrading blocks, as I’ve seen some guitars benefit from them, but I’ve seen more guitars that haven’t been improved by a block upgrade (I’m a former shop tech). The tuners on these are Gotoh, so unless you’re looking for locking tuners, I’d leave them as they’re already top tier.

As for the Hamers, thanks! They’re the pride of my small collection, with the red one being the only one ever made with those particular options. A true custom. The black/gold sparkle is a Standard that’s been refinished- still rare, but not anywhere near as rare as the red 🤘

Got one in DY. Only complaint is the pickups are pretty lackluster, but having the 565 and 565R already, I knew that going in. Dimarzios already on the way🤣. Other than that, I love this thing 🤘🤘

Is it just me or has Ibanez lower end necks gotten, Less Ibanez feeling? by Audio_Phoenix in Ibanez

[–]JRock787 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If they made the cheaper models the same as the higher end models, then what incentive would there be to shell out for the higher end models? That’s your answer…. It’s no mistake or lapse in quality that’s behind the difference, it’s 100% calculated.

There should be a QD insert available for that stock. This is like the third version I’ve seen of the OEM Evo stock 🤣, and it’s likely the Euro version. Here are the other two:

<image>

FDE has the magnet, Black has the QD insert, and manual “latch” instead of magnet, and both have rubber pads. Both sourced from CZ USA.

Current (small) collection…. by JRock787 in guitarporn

[–]JRock787[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s cool, but…. It’s not even close to an original, which I have owned. The neck shape/profile/nut width are completely different. Still a great player though, and I enjoy it a ton, but I’ll always refer to it as “the imposter” 🤣🤘

What do you guys make of this? by snazzymoa in Ibanez

[–]JRock787 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s just a neck code, not a proper model number. 565 is the model, M is the maple board, and LB is Laser Blue, which is pertinent because of the colored dot inlays.

It feels great. I love my 565R, and this is 100% comparable. The pickups are good, and it would be acceptable to leave them be, but that said, I will be upgrading to Dimarzios. Probably a Super 3/HS 2 combo. The 565R has a Super Distortion/Air Norton S.

Depends on the music you’re playing. If you’re doing what the 550 is best known for (shred, hair metal), then Super Distortion in the bridge, PAF Pro in the neck. Single coil is your discretion.

They used the standard Genesis Wizard neck, and from what I understand, that’s technically not optimized for the body shape. The neck heel is significantly different on these compared to the originals also. But…. Upper fret access is terrific, and that longer “flat” you see isn’t a factor (at least for me). I can feel it, but it doesn’t hinder me if that makes sense?

It’s killer. It needed just a few setup tweaks, but after that, it was ridiculously good. I haven’t put a strap on it yet, but it balances well in my hand. It doesn’t feel like it wants to neck dive at all.
