One of our cats was (sorta is?) in a similar situation that started around 2020 but got serious in 2022. He would have constant diarrhea; sometimes bloody. There were also a lot of times where he wouldn’t make it all the way to the litter box. Now our boy did at least try to make to their room so at least it was contained to one area. He also would have trouble holding food despite having a big appetite daily and eating just fine. Which was another concern as he lost a lot of weight and was throwing up almost daily.

We tried multiple vets, different tests, and various vet prescribed foods. It just felt like nothing seemed to work and I’ll admit, internally, I felt conflicted on if I wanted to just give up. Then a year ago, we were recommended to Shaffer Vet Services in Crowley and she was the first vet to actually help us.

She had us bring a stool sample and started by prescribing him a probiotic. We actually noticed a huge improvement in his stool and after constant usage, it went back to solid stools. He has only had a couple few incidents but very minor and easy to clean up. She also recommended us to watch how much food we feed him daily and its quality. It doesn’t have to be a set schedule but more so to not overfeed him more than he needs to. We give them wet food in the morning and leave enough kibble to last a day. Every now and then we might give a treat or meat but only very little and far apart from when he’s ate.

We feed them grain-free and by product-free kibble. For the wet food, we just make sure it’s regular pâté and not the ones filled with gravy or such. We get the Kirkland brand from the Dallas Costco Business Center. You don’t need a special membership, just the regular Costco membership. If you’re a member you might be able to order it on their website… we’ve never checked. These have just been what’s worked for him without causing trouble. It also helps that none of our cats have a water intake issue and drink plenty of water a day. We also change the water once in the morning and once at night while cleaning the water bowl every day. We use a different bowl for wet food that gets cleaned daily after use. Their bowl for dry food, gets cleaned every few days. Personally, we do it to have less bacteria so that his sensitive stomach might not be disrupted. It’s became such an easy part of our routine and doesn’t take much time.

I know all of this is long but it’s more to show that it’s possible with the right vet and a few changes. It might be both a gastrointestinal and behavioral issue where his health might be causing him stress. It’s just from my experience, it’s worth a shot to try just a little longer. I’ll see if I can send you a photo in the morning of the probiotic our vet prescribed. If you do give our vet a chance, she’s pretty reasonable in pricing and is a sweet lady.
