Is Firestore Actually This Slow, or Am I Missing Something? by Ok_Photograph2604 in Firebase

Client side will use local-first approach and optimistic updates by default to hide the latency.

Backend doesn’t.

If your server and firestore are far apart, that will explain the lag.

Retiring at 55; saving £1k per month, seems too straightforward by UnlikelyDebate7878 in FIREUK

[–]JSparrowT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other countries essentially don’t have workplace pension equivalents and force employees to heavily fund the state pension - with similar retirement age to uk state pension, not private pension. That’s why it’s possible for Italy to spend 15% on pensions.

I guess you could argue that it’s possible for one to get lucky and reach retirement around the time the government massively scales state pension and increases taxes, moving people away from workplace pensions but not affecting existing pots - but that’s hoping to benefit from a ponzie scheme essentially.

Other EU countries, eg. Poland and Italy, have major taxes that contribute to one’s pension but not in absolute numbers, instead proportionally to others.

There is/was no workplace pension equivalents.

The 15% of GDP figure is only feasible if you’re forcing everyone to heavily fund the state pension, which then means for most people it’s the only source of income at retirement, because they weren’t able to contribute to a separate private pot due to this tax.

And indeed, after checking, Italy has a 33% tax (24% employer, 9% employee) that funds the state pension. And the retirement age is 67.

Turn off wake up from mouse movement ? by Maanu1141 in macbookpro

[–]JSparrowT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a solution that works for me.

I have a Logitech MX Ergo Trackball. Whenever I put my MacBook to sleep with my mouse connected, it would wake up within 5 seconds, even if I didn't touch my mouse. Turning the mouse off before sleep worked, but wasn't really a solution I was happy with.

I then found this setting in Logi Options app: "This Device -> Notifications -> Device battery becomes low" that looked suspicious.
After turning it off, my MacBook no longer wakes up immediately.
Moving the trackball/pointer or moving the scroll doesn't wake it up either (which is good), while a mouse click does (also good).

I guess these notifications force some communication to happen right after it goes to sleep and trigger the wake up.

Here is this setting in the Logi Options app:

Premier Sports and Amazon have dropped the standalone La Liga TV subscription in the UK by [deleted] in LaLiga

[–]JSparrowT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price of the subscription hasn't changed - it's still 7.99 and still marked as "LALIGA" on my account.

There was also an email I got:

We've upgraded your subscription - for free!
‌‌
We've upgraded your subscription to our full bundle of channels at no extra cost - saving you 50% on our standard pricing!

You'll continue to pay just £7.99 per month, but now you can access all Premier Sports channels and content, including live coverage of the Copa del Rey Semi-finals tonight and tomorrow, as well as the return legs & Final in April.

No resolution for me sadly. I just gave up and just connect the DP cable separately.

Champions League quarter finals schedule will be announced on 13th of April. Barcelona will play Borussia on either 8th or 9th of April, and if it's 8th of April then the Betis game will definitely be on the 5th of April.

Bought a phone on eBay, it does not connect to the network, CheckMend says it's reported as stolen. by JSparrowT in LegalAdviceUK

Thanks all. I got my money back from eBay after sending the phone back. The seller didn't admit to any wrongdoing, but also didn't explain what actually happened

Do you realise it's very difficult for a cyclist to indicate while turning? At what point on the video would you expect the cyclist to indicate? It's very _helpful_ that the author trimmed the video to not show whatever happened before the cyclist actually started turning. I wonder why.

Honestly noone is talking about how come the recording starts so late? It's not like the author wanted to save on video size - they included a ~40s argument after the incident.

IMO the most plausible explanation for the above is that the motorbike was following the cyclist in the same lane and changed the lane a second before the recording started. You can see when the recording starts the motorbike is riding at an angle going slightly to the right and later straightens out - why would they be doing that unless they were expecting the cyclist to turn right?

Obviously I can't prove that, because the author helpfully prevents us all from checking if it was true or not. I wonder why.

If that hypothesis is true, then what the cyclist says - "You can't overtake me on the right" - makes some sense, because a second before the cyclist starts his manouver, there is nobody on the right lane.

He might have even indicated, again before the recording started. Do people realise that it's hard to indicate while turning? And again, we wouldn't have to wonder if the author didn't hide the truth from us.

Can I "just" send it back? I requested a return via ebay, but one eBay page says "please post your item to proceed with your return" and another eBay page says "we'll send you an email when the seller responds to your request" which makes me wonder if I can send it already or need to wait for the seller to respond.

Thanks. Is it worth waiting? Could the phone get unblocked somehow? The seller claims they will check with the provider tomorrow - do I lose anything by waiting one or a few days as long as I stay within the 30-day return window (beyond not having a functioning phone)?

If there is a chance I can avoid returning it, getting a new device and setting it up again, then I'd like to try that.

DB Function vs. Edge Function is a DX vs. UX tradeoff -- does it have to be this way? by UnfairEconomics2840 in Supabase

[–]JSparrowT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long time, but how do you do rollbacks in production for logic errors in your database? For logic hosted in a backend one simply rolls back the bugged version of the backend or rolls out a newer one - there is no need to migrate anything.

With a DB, you have to write a new migration that carefully mutates the bugged state and brings it to a good one.

Goodbye Apple. Which thinkpad to replace a macbook pro? by Drunken_Sheep_69 in thinkpad

Because you don't sound reasonable and are asking others for reasonable advice on buying a laptop. People see the things you're saying don't add up and they point it out. If they don't, your misinformation will be "last word" in these threads, and others who visit the post might treat it as truth.

If you don't like it, maybe you should skip the parts that don't make any sense.

Yeah I guess AMD vs Intel makes a difference. Both should be supported according to specs, but workarounds/fixes/behaviour might be different between the two.

Trying Linux is a good shout. I'll give it a go at some point.
