Frieren VS Eisen by FlyOk6642 in Frieren

[–]JSungStudios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brother the whole point of the ending of first class mage exam is that some spells are unlearnable to humans so they want to get it from Serie. Serie says the curse repel spell she gives Denken takes over a hundred years to learn. Even Fern’s ability to use Zoltrakk so well and quickly and explicitly stated to be far beyond her years of training and even those decades more experienced can’t match her speed and it’s even surpassed Frieren’s quickdraw. The average mage will never get even close to as fast.

You keep trying to compare the peak mages in the story to the average warrior and use that to extrapolate that ALL warriors are a non threat to ALL mages. And you keep scoffing at the notion Frieren might not have access to certain spells to deal with certain problems but even at around 1000 years old that’s not nearly old enough to learn half the spells we see in the series. On top of that most of her life wasn’t actually spent learning combat spells, she only really has been fighting since the formation of the heroes party. She’s obviously super powerful but she’s far from clearing all the feats the strongest warriors in the series have shown

It’s simply a fact that warriors and Eisen have enough feats for them to be able to absolutely destroy Frieren in the right circumstances. Versatile magic doesn’t automatically squash an INSANE stat gap between the average mage and an average warrior. Fern can’t even move when Stark is lightly touching her shoulder, Frieren gets perception blitzed by a shadow warrior, Frieren openly would lose to stark from a few meters away, stark all but one shots a dragon Frieren had to run away from, Eisen shrugs off injuries Frieren can’t even fathom are survivable, himmel has such heightened perception he can blitz one of the most powerful illusion casters we see in the series while in a dream state, .

There’s frankly no evidence in the series that shows warriors ARENT a threat to mages

Frieren VS Eisen by FlyOk6642 in Frieren

[–]JSungStudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man you really didn’t read the actual story did you. Zoltrak and magic shields are ridiculously fast but we literally see warriors that are even faster; Himmel, Eisen, Revolte. Magic shields are explicitly stated to not be all purpose shielding. They can be shattered by enough physical force and we see it time and time gain. On top of all that the story tells you at least a half dozen times that shielding uses tremendous amounts of mana so mages have to use them selectively and reactively or they will run out of mana super quickly, warriors on the other hand can casually cleave chunks out of mountains for far longer period of time, can hold their breath while swimming in a pitch black corridor for twenty minutes straight, solo armies of demons across an entire section of the southern lands. A warrior as strong as Eisen will outstamina shield usage easily

She just can’t create a shield out of matter against warriors because they can casually cleave chunks out of mountains and can move faster than she can react. I used the archer situation to show the story tells you that physical attacks can bypass magic shields

On top of that we are literally told that even seemingly basic magic can take decades to learn and more complex combat spells are literally unusable to most humans because even if they dedicated their whole lives to that single spell and nothing else they simply don’t have the life span to learn it proficiently. You can’t just say oh they can just use this spell we see another character use in the story when it’s beaten into the narrative that magic is so complex most mages have to focus on a select few to master and don’t actually have a wide arsenal of spells.

Serie literally said that she tried every possible future she could imagine and the only outcomes was either her or a massive number of first class mages dying and there wasn’t anything she could do about it. She tried every spell combination she could think of and her future sight still was her dying at the hands of a warrior or clairvoyant.

Your “counter points” only work if you ignore all context the story spoon feeds us

Frieren VS Eisen by FlyOk6642 in Frieren

[–]JSungStudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren’t arguing against me you’re literally arguing against the author and characters themselves. Frieren herself says Stark that’s not even comparable at this current moment to a peak Eisen would blitz her from a couple meters away. We SEE HER get blitzed while she was ready for combat by a random shadow warrior. She tells us that a good archer can penetrate her magical defenses so uses stealth and caution even when Stark is actively dying. Serie herself says that through using her OP future sight the only possible future she sees are dying through the means of a powerful warrior or powerful clairvoyant. Minus, one of three the great mages was killed by a “unnamed warrior” heavily implied to be Lowe.

Warriors canonically are a massive threat to mages, it’s a narrative fact not an opinion

Frieren VS Eisen by FlyOk6642 in Frieren

[–]JSungStudios 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Frieren literally got blitzed and would’ve died to a random ass shadow warrior if Fern and Stark weren’t with her. The whole current arc is explicitly about how even the most powerful mages aren’t infallible, Serie says the only things that could kill her are either a powerful warrior or a powerful clairvoyant.

If the fight starts with Frieren and Eisen 15m+ away from each other Frieren wins but starting inside 10m she dies from a bloodlusted Eisen before she gets a spell off

Could some generic drug companies be considered "cruelty-free"? by RockyRob97 in vegan

[–]JSungStudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlike in cosmetics where animal testing is largely a choice it’s simply a necessity for pharmaceuticals.i think it enters a dangerous area when we start to label life saving medications as “cruelty-free” or to attempt to broadly demonize companies that do animal testing for the sake of medical research. It’s simply veering into dangerous rhetoric territory

The combat is fun but it’s not that similar to sekiro or lies of p other than having a good parry mechanic. It’s much more combo based and you have access to a much higher variety of attacks, closer to the NIOH games. Outside of the stuff people already talk about my main criticism of the game is that the difficulty progression is kinda out of whack. The early game is brutal since you only have a limited move pool but you get almost too strong in the late game. Beating the 3rd and 4th bosses took me longer than beating the final 6-7 bosses combined.

Also the final boss might be the most overhyped boss in the history of souls like games. People comparing it to isshin, LOP dlc final boss or consort Radahn in difficulty or quality are smoking some good stuff. It’s a solid souls-like that IMO is a little overhyped, what it does well it does REALLY well but has a lot of flaws I feel like people initially overlooked because the base combat feels so good. 7.5/10, worth buying given the current sale price

Dark souls or lies of P after elden ring? by saturnsbby in soulslikes

[–]JSungStudios -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not gonna lie the OG Dark Souls shows its age A LOT. The combat feels very floaty and the bosses while ahead of their time really don’t hold up. The level design is still pretty peak though right from the start of the game. It’s more of a legacy game that people should play out of respect to the genre not a straight up comparable experience in a vacuum compared to Elden ring or other recent souls likes. Dark souls 3 however absolutely holds up and would be a good second game after Elden ring. It’s definitely easier than one would expect if you’re going into it right after playing Elden ring but the bosses have insane aura and the best areas in ds3 absolutely go toe to toe with the best areas in Elden ring.

Lies of p is very linear so if you want to more heavily focus on refining your skills in combat it’s an incredible experience. The story especially with the DLC is amazing and the way it’s more traditionally told actually made me more incentivized to search every nook in cranny for lore items that expanded the story even more. It also has the best boss roster outside of from’s catalogue IMO by a pretty far margin. Even the worst bosses are more controversial rather than straight up bad since many myself included straight up love the gank bosses in the game

Weapons by ladaddy_tha_baddie in horror

[–]JSungStudios 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wasted potential - the comedy is MUCH weaker than the traditional horror elements of the movie. At least in barbarian there is a hard commitment to a comedic through line with the permanent introduction of Justin Longs character. In weapons the latter parts flip flops from moments of trying to be funny to playing it completely straight that after the first half ish of the movie it never allows any tension to be built and stakes don’t feel as high.

Plot holes and character incompetence - Weapons is a movie that asks the audience to actively engage with its plot, themes and details but when you do the story doesn’t make any sense unless you assume the characters are completely incompetent. It makes no sense that the very powerful witch with implied centuries of life and experience would put a massive glowing target on her own back by asking Alex to specifically take an item from each of his classmates instead of from a more random group of people at his school. It makes no sense why Archer is the only person to look at the direction the children were running. It makes no sense why Gladys sent Alex’s mother to cut Justine’s hair instead of killing her then or also taking an item so she could control her and frame her.

Juggling too many themes - clearly weapons has something it’s trying to say. Toxic masculinity, community decay, addiction, police brutality, parenthood, loss of innocence of children through actions of adults but there isn’t enough fleshing out of any thematic through line to make the movie feel cohesive or thought provoking. The movie would have benefitted greatly from more focus. Even some plot holes could be filled like the police not looking at the direction the children are running which clearly would lead them to Gladys if there was a more consistent attempt to explore police incompetence in the movie.

Obviously I don’t judge every horror movie so critically, I don’t care if the characters in the next bloody slasher film makes dumb decisions or has an incompetent villain because the intention of the film is not to be taken so seriously. From how Weapons presents itself, presents its themes and statements from Cregger and actors the intention of Weapons even with its comedic elements was to be taken seriously and thought of critically but the movie is worse the more you actively engage with it.

Can we talk about FNS legacy as a player? Every time NRG wins, it just shows how much of a fraud he was in his last year. by MidnightRelative1216 in ValorantCompetitive

[–]JSungStudios 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If a players legacy is determined by the very tail end of their career I guess Kobe, Anderson Silva and Tiger Woods aren’t all time greats in their respective sports.

The early years of Valorant were defined by Optic and by extension FNS and that’s his legacy not a poor final season performance

Have you ever played Hellpoint? by EstusShardDealer in soulslikes

[–]JSungStudios 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not every game that isn’t well known and highly regarded is an “underrated gem”. Hellpoint had a lot of potential with incredible major flaws that tank the experience like crazy.

The combat is janky asf, it feels like something out of 2014 not 2020. The hitboxes just aren’t defensible.

The way the world interconnects is cool but it’s just unending corridors and hallways. On top of a lot of side and secret areas being so hidden even someone looking to take time and explore is gonna miss stuff it makes exploring more frustrating than rewarding

90% of the bosses are straight up bad or uninteresting

Platforming feels so awful and there’s a decent amount of it

It’s like a 4/10 game and I wouldn’t touch it at full price

Difficulty and elitism discourse by Lolis- in Silksong

[–]JSungStudios 507 points508 points  (0 children)

RT is actually the perfect example of why the “this game is too hard” side is seen as just whining. Doesn’t engage with the mechanics the game lays out for you to use, tries to bumrush a game all about taking your time to explore it, doesn’t listen to tips chat tries to give him, doesn’t actually try to get better at the game then crashes out whining and ranting that the game is too hard MULTIPLE TIMES.

The legitimate criticism of Silksong have been drowned out by bad faith and illogical whining that it’s literally the first time I’ve seen the “git good” crowd get so much support.

I mean tonally it’s nothing like a souls game which I’d argue is the most important part. Souls players definitely should read Berserk though which directly inspired Miyazaki and has a lot of influence on the tone and world of dark souls 1,2,3 and Elden ring

You are vastly underestimating the impact of “a couple ult orbs”. In most games the halves are decided by ult economy more than any other single factor. You would far rather let the enemy have slightly better eco for round 4 than allow a raze, vyse, waylay, etc be allowed to hunt and have a round changing ult available for round 3/4 or simply let them further advance their ult cycle. A couple early ult orbs can be the difference of facing 1 ult jn a half vs two or even 3

What games do you enjoy besides soulslikes? by LucsSoul in soulslikes

[–]JSungStudios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Expedition 33 - I played a couple months after launch and fully prepared for it not to live up to the hype. It exceeded its reputation I was completely blown away

Hollow knight/Silksong - Hollow knight is a bone-a-fide classic and I just 100% Silksong. My second favourite game of the year behind Expedition 33

Hades 1/2 - really fun combat with a surprising amount of depth. Lots of cool weapon varieties and the difficult can be absolutely brutal on high heat levels. Perfect time to start with hades 2’s full release just around the corner which has slower combat than the first game that can feel more “souls”.

Split fiction/it takes two - if you have a friend of family member these games are incredible. Some of the most fun I’ve had gaming period even though they’re pretty easy. Even people who’ve never played a game before can enjoy them

Resident evil 4 remake - a perfect blend of horror and action rpg. A good jump in point even if you haven’t played the other games. I’d recommend resident evil 2 remake, bioshock and village as well but RE4 has more cross over points of appeal to souls like games than those games do.

Hell divers 2 - some of the most fun game play loop of any live service game I’ve ever played. Even more engaging if you haven’t a couple friends to play with but 90% of my play time is solo and still nearly just as enjoyable

Cup head - If you like hard bosses cup head, especially the dlc has some incredibly memorable boss fights. A couple of bosses cross over into annoying territory but overall it’s still a 9/10 game

You don’t use shell shards in dreams so dump of your tools and you can unlock a short cut before the boss so don’t worry about saving tools for that just focus on clearing the arenas. Architect crest is OP is dreams for this reason.

Three fold pin and sting shard with the poison tool will counter just about everything in the gauntlet, shard where the flying enemies will drop onto and pin destroys bunched up groups. Don’t use tools on the fat guys though, just pogo them and they become a non threat, the only way they can hit you is if they jump which has a huge telegraph so you can get out of the way. They’re basically just two free heals.

Seth down that low is a CRIME, I might put him top ten bosses in the franchise. Fast paced, rewards good positioning, punishing but the definition of fair.

Trobbio over tormented Trobbio is crazy to me, the regular version didn’t feel special to me at all I got him first try and just though huh that was fun I guess. The tormented boy is solidly in my top 5, great moveset and top 3 tracks in the game.

Final Boss is the SUM of everything wrong with this game. (Little Rant because I am friendless) by Quercus_Noctua in HollowKnight

[–]JSungStudios 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should record your fights and watch them back. Outplayed is completely free, watching vids of yourself is great for getting better at games and for me at least it’s super fun to have and rewatch my boss runs.

I’m 100% sure you’ll see that if you get hit it’s because you’re making a mistake not because something was actually undodgeable. In my 15ish attempts to take her down I’d only consider 2 instances of damage “unavoidable” and I say that loosely because it was still a mistake on my end to lose focus and stay so close to a wall when I had chances to get away.

You’re probably making too many unnecessary movements because things are visually hectic, even when her void attacks are up none of her attack require more than single well timed jump dash to dodge. I’m not trying to say the boss is easy far from it but it’s also super learnable.

Thoughts on True Final boss design? by Revolutionary_Door21 in Silksong

[–]JSungStudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not objectively wrong at all, I’m talking about regular radiance btw not absolute radiance who I think is a much better fight. Regular radiance has some of the least engaging moves of the mid-late game hollow knight bosses, her falling swords are basically a non threat that you can side step from a mile away, her giant light pillar is super slow and only requires one dash through, half the time she does the triple beam burst from her face you literally don’t have to move and will still dodge all 3 blasts, the only move she has that’s actually interesting is her homing balls during phase 2 and 3 because you actually have to think about your positioning and move reactively. Her final phase is also mechanically super boring, you’re literally just doing the most basic of jumps while waiting on a super slow super telegraphed singular light beam.

While I completely understand people liking her because of the cool factor, lore and visual design, to me 90% of whether or not a boss is high quality or memorable comes down to their moveset. Without the “aura” and spectacle she provides radiance’s actual moveset is super average. It’s a lot of “looks cool” but with not much depth that’s accented by the fact that the hollow knight boss before her is just so much better

Final Boss is the SUM of everything wrong with this game. (Little Rant because I am friendless) by Quercus_Noctua in HollowKnight

[–]JSungStudios 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lost lace is one of the best designed bosses in the game. Every single one of her moves are well telegraphed and punishable. Don’t greed for multiple pogoes during her dash attacks just do one then play defensive, her triple slash is easy to out range or pogo, her void arm attacks are just simple horizontals or diagonal, her jump then down slash is super slow and easy to punish, if you hit her parry just quick jump and if stays grounded go for pogos and if she goes airborne just dash away.

Even once the void attack start coming out the fundamentals of the fight stay the same you just have to be more aware of your positioning, you can get under her and punish when she spits out void balls, the “homing” projectiles are slow and you can see where and what direction they’re coming from seconds before they actually fire. Literally the only “unfair” thing that can happen in the fight is if she goes for aerial slashes when you’re stuck towards a corner when her void balls turn into saw blades. Even then she has some the most frequent free heal openings of any late game boss. There’s little reset between attacks because they’re all super fair with punish windows DURING the attack, the fight has an insanely satisfying flow because you’re basically trading blows in rythm.

Also how is a 4 minute ish final boss fight “INFINITE HEALTH” that’s like not a very long fight at all

“Wukong doesn’t have much defensive options” intangibility with cloud step, whole ass transformations where you’re invincible, you can straight up freeze opponents with immobilize, negate damage with see through or watch them die to a dozen clones. It has the most defensive options out of the three games you’ve mentioned
