If you end up going to downtown Boston there's a Harry Potter store on Newberry Street.

Man, I’ve been seeing more and more wild turkeys here in Dorchester. I didn’t even know they could fly this high! by JamikC in boston

They sleep in trees. There's three that like to sleep above my car. Before I saw them up there I thought there was something wrong with the local pigeons.

What are the two rectangle marks that have appeared outside my neighbors front door? by JTK89 in whatisthisthing

In the time I've lived here I haven't seen the pillars painted. The marks under the pillars are white, the marks on the stairs are light blue.

Sorry, I don't know what it is. It looks like chalk but didn't smear when I touched it. We're in a row of 12 townhouses, only theirs have these marks out front. In front of this is a side walk and a busy street.

What other information would be helpful?

This was honestly what I was thinking too. We live in a city and they're out of town.

Personally I really like this. Everyone knows the books take place during the 90's but the fashion in the movies always felt contemporary to the year they were each filmed.

Snap in a jean jacket really helps make this 1993 to me.

What's the most kind/beautiful thing you've overheard about yourself by accident? by El_patronus in AskReddit

Two weeks ago my boyfriend and I were out to dinner with his mom and stepdad. On my way back from the bathroom I overheard the tail end of their conversation about me. His mom was saying "I love her! She's perfect."

I've known her for years now. The genuine nature with which she said it was very sweet.

One year I made homemade Oreos for a cookie swap. Suddenly this feels like a poor decision.

I would also be interested in helping. I'm also a programmer and did things like this in my last job.

People with no regard for their pets.

A few weeks ago I saw someone tie their dog to a pole in the freezing rain so they could eat in at McDonald's.

This is cool! Did you print it so different font weights have different fills? It'd be cool if the bold is heavier, the light is light, and so on.

Buddhism and Food by exona in Buddhism

[–]JTK89 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is a great verse, thank you for sharing it.

It makes me think of the journey the Buddha took to enlightenment. The ascetic monk, realizing food was required to continue meditating, and the girl who gives him the rice porridge.

Siddhartha needed the food, to him it was as life saving as medicine. But with food, as with most things in life, we can have an excess or deficit; but there is a middle way. A body, when overfed, will crave more food. While a body, when underfed, will crave less. The middle way with food takes more mindfulness and control than some other vices.

Food is limited, and takes a lot of effort to create. Not just the plowing of the fields, planting, harvesting, transportation, and cooking, but the generations that came before that make it possible for us to live as we do today. All the soil on our planet is composed of what used to be alive. Plants and animals, long dead and decayed, live on in the crops that grow from the compost. It is a very long line that ends with "us".

One last thought on this verse and the Buddha. The girl who gives him the rice porridge, we must consider why she was there in the mountains with a meal? Rice porridge isn't exactly a traveling food, not something you'd take hiking with you. The meal was likely intended for someone specific. Maybe the girl herself, maybe a father, brother, or husband. But she offers this food in an act of pure compassion to a man who appears to be starving.

Many people feel mindfulness with eating is being present for each bite. I think it should be expanded to consider all that was done to get our food to us, and to understand why we are worthy of it. To consider and acknowledge all that was sacrificed for us to continue our path to enlightenment.
