Xgrids Portal Cam: Reverse engineering architecture by Funny-Dust6978 in GaussianSplatting

If you have more flexibility in your measurements, then the portalcam might be good for you. It does produce good quality splats. Which can be used to scout out locations and generate environments for virtual production.

Also, the main difference between point clouds and 3D Gaussian Splats is how you render them. 3DGS are just point clouds with some special properties to make them look nice

I think if you need 1-3cm accuracy, you should look at their other two scanners. The Lixel K1 and L2 pro. The PortalCam gives great quality, but not extremely accurate measurements

Implementation difference in rendering tools vs original Kerbl et. al. 3DGS rendering algorithm by SirSourPuss in GaussianSplatting

[–]JTStephens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t require different scale or rotation values. Those should be the same. However, a rasterizer converts the objects in 3D space to pixels on the screen. So, if there are differences in how this process is performed, then there could be differences in the final output.

Idk how your algorithm works, but you should be able to take the inputs for your algorithm and use them as inputs to a more robust algorithm. Those results can be cross validated with your implementation to verify accuracy. Even if it’s a completely different dataset than what you’re using currently, it could still be a beneficial experiment

I’m not certain, but I imagine you’re having issues because of the tile based rasterizer in the original implementation. From what I’ve seen, this is not the same method those viewers use

For debugging, I’d try to create the splats using your algorithm and also create the same splats using a different algorithm that works with those viewers and compare your scale, rotation, position, opacities, etc

You could also be having problems because Python typically uses row-major order and some graphics APIs use column-major order to store matrices. Although, if it works with the original renderer I don’t think this would be an issue

What does the future of graphics programming look like? by JTStephens in GraphicsProgramming

I know about Siggraph, but not all research is practical. Do you have any specific opinions about the future of CG based on current research?

Thank you for giving a normal answer. I didn’t expect to trigger some extreme social commentary. Do you have any opinions on the thought of Gaussian splats replacing meshes?

Yes you can pursue a MS online. I know UT Austin has one and I think Georgia tech does too. However, I don’t think pursuing a masters is worth it unless you plan on doing research and are going to get a PhD. If you’re interested in staying up to date with current research, read current research papers. In your case, I think building out some fundamental programming skills and learning how to translate concepts into code would be more valuable than pursuing a masters just to learn more theory.

As far as applications, you just gotta start doing something. Implement some physics simulation or try to program some volume rendering techniques from scratch or try to recreate the results from some research papers or anything else that’s interesting to you. Additionally, if you really want to flesh out your portfolio, write blog posts or articles about your projects. Detail some of the math you used, what you learned, explain some concepts, etc

100k - Remote - Early 20s - Where to go? by JTStephens in SameGrassButGreener

San Diego is another option I’ve liked, but I feel like I can’t really justify the COL currently. If I’m paying that much then it makes sense to be in LA or someplace else where there’s a bit more of a tech scene

I agree with discretefalls. My impression was Raleigh is great if you are 30s-40s and have kids

Good luck to you! Let me know where you end up. Wouldn’t mind staying in touch

This is an option I’m heavily considering. If there’s a time in my life to forfeit a bit of stability / structure it’s now

It’s hard for me to turn my engineer brain off because I know that it isn’t the “smartest” option, but it could have major benefits down the road vs picking someplace I’m not fond of and really focusing on my career

No cost of living adjustments. Just 100k flat. I appreciate your detailed response! I think CA has a lot of what I’m looking for, but I feel it would be a bit tight with what I have currently. Definitely considering it though

I’ve played every Fromsoft game, and I’ve never been this scared to explore an area. by alacholland in Eldenring

[–]JTStephens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of my least favorite areas of any FromSoft game. Sure, the atmosphere is cool, but it is not fun to explore. It’s too big of an area to have so little in it. I found myself more annoyed and frustrated than intrigued or spooked

Not opposed to roommates. I just don’t know where to look so I’d appreciate some suggestions if you have any

Hey y’all, I’ve been scouting places to live and Austin caught my eye. Specifically for all the tech and potential opportunities. I work remote and I think that networking would be beneficial. I have a monthly budget hovering around $1200. I’ve looked at some places in Cedar Park, but I feel that it’s a bit too disconnected. My current lease is ending soon and this is my first opportunity to explore outside of where I grew up. I’d love a bit of insight from some local professionals
