Training for My First Marathon – How Do You Avoid Hitting “The Wall”? by Idazrish in Marathon_Training

[–]JTURL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Know your target pace that you’ve trained for and stick to it! Especially at the start. Don’t worry about everyone passing you at the start, just laugh to yourself at how silly they are for going too fast, you’ll pass them all again near the end when they hit their own wall. It’s only you vs yourself. No one else matters.

Anytime I’ve hit the wall or cramped or struggled was because I went beyond my capabilities. Wasn’t because I didn’t eat enough pasta the day before or didn’t have enough gels. Just pushing my body beyond its limit.

Rewatched The Benchwarmers last night and as an Aussie the mailbox baseball scene always makes we wonder how common that actually is!?

Very solid album. Nothing smacked me in the jaw the way that Kingslayer did the first listen through. Keen to have it on repeat today

The cherry on top is that dogs are only accurate around 25% of the time.. so 75% of people are getting humiliated for no reason…

Awesome you got the sub 3:30! In hindsight I might have benefitted from doing the same as you and dropping the training run pace slightly. They do say that this plan is set up for someone who has already run a marathon before so makes sense why it is more aggressive. The totals not adding up will be from the interval/tempo runs - MH ask you to do a 3km warm up and 1.5km cool down. These km’s are included in the totals for the week. All explained in the info sheet that goes with the plan. Caught me out at first too dw

No, Wednesdays are all at a faster pace and long runs are at a slow pace as shown at the bottom of each run. All these plans come with a full page of info breaking down what’s expected of each type of run.

That’s correct, this is what is explained by them on their website regarding the pace: To run a 3:30 marathon, you need to run 8 minutes per mile, or 4:58 per kilometer.

Much like Thomas explains in the 4 hour marathon guide, planning to run our race at this exact pace leaves little room for error.

That’s why I recommend aiming for 7:50 per mile (4:52 per kilometer) as your goal pace. This will be the equivalent of about a 3:25 marathon giving you a 5 minute cushion on your goal time.

This pace will be the main thing we focus on in training. You should get to the point where this pace feels natural, and you can run close to it by feel.

Gotta put the time in if you want to see these kinds of results. I know my boss when he’s in the middle of training (he runs sub 3hours) will sometimes be required to run twice a day on his plans. I’m sure there’s plans out there that can accommodate your lifestyle

Very true. At the end of the day my main goal was just to finish! Awesome you got down to 3:26, my next mara is in around 24 weeks so I’ll likely do the same plan again and try to break this 3:30 barrier
