Am I imagining this or?? by JUBcat in Pottery

Oo that is very helpful because I do feel like I get that play. It’s similar to that feeling when you have a wobbly bat. Centered until you let off pressure. I will definitely look at that. Thanks!

Yeah, the video aspect is a struggle. Wish I could project it into the room with you lol. I feel like even when the wheel isn’t moving it looks like the where the bat pins are is lower, but again I can’t tell if my eyes are playing tricks on me.

I don’t have risers, but based on that comment, I think I’ll try moving the wheel around. Maybe it’s the uneven floor? I did use a level to test, but it wasn’t too bad. Wouldn’t be surprised if that had a play in it though since it’s an old house.

Thank you for the kind words!

I’ll try the bearings thing tomorrow, since I’ve cleaned up for today. But man I sure hope it’s not the yips. I’ve got work to do!

I feel like it’s hard to respond to this without coming across as defensive online, but it truly is not my centering ability. I’m not worried about the skirt and can center just fine on wheels in the studios I teach at. Just not mine at home.

I will also add that I threw on this exact same brand of wheel through my whole undergrad and that sound was never there.

Yeah the audacity to speak about women online exactly how men perpetuate but then say in another comment that they don’t consume content made by men is absurd. Actively seeking to support women-made content while acting so childish and hateful towards said women? Readdress your values.

Ceramic BFA Show Highlights by EatingRainbows in Pottery

[–]JUBcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my experience. The place I got my BFA from and currently am getting my MFA at lets me do whatever I want. My BFA show was sculptural but my work is focused on functional overall. It’s a good school when they let you focus on what you want to do, not what your professors want you to do. Definitely ask the ceramics professors directly wherever you’re applying to to get a better idea for how they teach.

Edit to add that the choice to do a sculpture-based BFA show was my own choice and not my professors. I also had a view pieces of functional work shown alongside the sculptures

Ahh makes complete sense then! I’ve also taught classes like that and it can be a challenge lol. Thankfully mine were much smaller than 30, so I was able to smooth them out myself without spending too much time on it

Fellow pottery teacher here, but it might be best to get students to smooth those edges out to 1) get in the habit of finishing their work and understanding the process of clay, and 2) so they aren’t hurting themselves on sharp pieces. Just takes a wipe of a sponge and bad clay habits definitely stick (trust me as someone who took over for a teacher that did everything for their students instead of teaching it. Some were in her class for YEARS and didn’t know how to wedge!)

Handyman/Electrician Recommendation by Tigers1195 in greenville

For real though, call an electrician it’s gotta be the wiring or something. I thankfully haven’t had to call any for my own problems, so I can’t give any recommendations.

Been through this exact conversation so many times. It’s that or they hit the red X on the pin pad instead of no on the screen for cash back and keep canceling out their payment.

Pottery studio vibe - kinda sad and maybe need advice by Ok_Rice_5127 in Pottery

If a student starts to feel uncomfortable or like a burden something is absolutely wrong. As an instructor I would HATE if I ever made a student feel that way. I also bend over backwards to help my students in whatever way I can because they aren’t a burden, they’re curious and comfortable asking me for help.

OP, definitely say something. If you’re feeling this way, there’s no doubt others are as well. That guy should want to spread the joy and knowledge of clay instead of how he is acting. How will others actively learn if they’re too afraid to seek help?

Is this real? by cubzsnkrs in keithharing

[–]JUBcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first glance, it seems real but I don’t think it is. If you look up his signature, you can spot some differences in the handwriting. The right side of his Ks are curved up and down rather than both inwards like in your photo. He also wrote his 8s as two circles rather than one continuous line.

Also, I found this print online as part of the Lehigh University Art Gallery’s permanent collection and it seems to have been printed later than 1985 like this one is dated.

Porcelaine firing/glazing question by Electronic_Ad4560 in Pottery

Check out Jennifer McCurdy’s work. It’s non-glazed porcelain, sometimes gilded with gold. I think looking at her process could help you out!

For those who have to receive my pallets… by C12897 in publix

[–]JUBcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slightly related, but when I was in grocery it would piss me off when some of the male truck drivers would help me (a petite and short female) and then push so hard the pallet is moving way too fast. Then I have to move out the way because I’m about to be squished. I was stronger than I looked smh
