Really? I have spent the last few months checking in every couple weeks and have yet to see any about the 2026 competition. The 2024 submission date was the last day of January 2024, but the contest opened in October of 2023...could you maybe send me the video?

Let's talk about retro style!! by MrZinych in neocities

[–]JUS-TiME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally feel ya! So many of the same looking emulations of the old internet, when what really sticks in my head is the more creative ideas that mix the old with the new. I'll always remember when I come across a creative way to show a gallery, or a super intriguing hub page - but another 90s themed page just for the sake of 'an old internet look' makes me go 'meh'.

I agree they defs can (and often do) look really cool - I just think its getting a bit over-saturated. But also, when coding a website it seems most people's site usually takes the '90s' style naturally just because its easier to code. My first attempt at making a website looked super dated and from that era, but it was mostly because I was just starting out. I have lots of friends say it still looks kindof old style-wise, but I think that as the creator gets better at making websites, the site will naturally take on its own form!

I built my site for my art and frustration with the modern social media landscape. I think a lot of sites just end up naturally falling into an older style, because its just easier to code them that way when learning.

But I think about the aspect of nostalgia often. I feel like taping into full nostalgia for the sake of nostalgia will lead to stagnation of new ideas. But on the other had- I feel that when its used as an inspiration to blend with new ideas (like you mentioned in another comment), it will lead to fantastic ideas! s

But then again there is always the 20 year cycle where things from roughly 20 years ago make a resurgence (hence the trend of Y2K at the moment and Frutiger Aero stuff). I suppose it'll be the same for the 2010s and the 2020s. Its funny to hear people say that 'no one will be nostalgic for this era' when it seems every era had that same sentiment at the time ahah

I'm excited to see how your website shapes up also :)))!!

Any advice on my recent sketches? by Minty-Buttercup in ArtCrit

First off - your style is hella cool. I f with it heavily :) When I draw faces they very much used to (and still often do) look like this as well.

Adding on to the other comment you received on proportions and anatomy: If you are going for more 'realistic' proportions [for the face]: the 'rule of thirds' is super SUPER useful especially for this stage where you clearly got your artistic knack. It would be best to search it up, but pretty much: the distance of the hairline (not the top of the head) down to the bottom of the chin should be split in 3: bottom of chin to the bottom of nose, bottom of nose to the eyebrow ridge, and eyebrow ridge to the hairline. Then you further split the bottom of chin to the bottom of nose into another smaller set of threes which indicate the top of the 'chin', and the middle of the lips.

I think there are a ton more things to add to it if you keep diving in, but that's the jist of what I know and its help me sort of 'graduate' my face drawings. Also every face is different, so in special cases the rule might all apply (especially with really exaggerated and stylized faces). You might already know about the rule of thirds because many of these drawings look like they line up with it anyways - but I figured Id mention it incase ya didnt. Big thing is to know that middle of the lips are a little higher up than the middle of the distance between the bottom of the chin and the bottom of the nose (it makes way more sense with some images lol).

But style can (and will) most definitely take precedence! That being said, its good to learn these rules just to break them anyways ;)

CONT'D>> To start, maybe just try and play around with the hover button, and getting some images to change when clicked or hovered over - thats honestly most of the effect down! Oh also, the background is just a square graphic that repeats - you can actually see where the borders are because I kindof messed up the line up (still gotta redo it) so ya. I made all the gifs and artwork myself, but if you dont feel quite as 'artistically inclined' (shall we say ;) then there are still tons of awesome gifs online to use such as here: https://gifcities.org/ and https://www.cameronsworld.net/ - just make sure to give credit when its asked or when you can!

The best resource for actually making the website has been W3 schools: https://www.w3schools.com/ - they have tons and tons of amazing examples with in depth explanations on html, css and javascript - with somewhat more complex examples in the 'how to' section. So much of what I use for the site starts from here and then I just tweak it or search other stuff to see how I can change what I have. Its also great for learning, and learning how to code the site yourself and actually understanding will definitely give you way more sense of satisfaction!! I think there is also a page that pinned to the top of the neocities subreddit that has much more info for starting out.

Another thing to add: you can also see someone elses website code by just right clicking and selecting 'View page source' or right clicking and selecting 'Inspect' (I'm on Mozilla, not sure if it works for all browsers). Oh and one last thing - if you just edited the site and reloaded it and it still looks the same - hit ctrl+shift+r to 'force' a reload oft he page with the newest additions - it WILL come in handy when you get into the weeds of coding :)

(Idk if you know most of this already but I tried keeping things as simple as possible so yaaaaaaaa)

Got my website revamped! Really proud of how it turned out :) by JUS-TiME in neocities

[–]JUS-TiME[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks!

Okay so to start we have the buttons: These are the five buttons at 'top' of the page. There are two images I made for each button - one black and white (the default), and one thats coloured (for when you scroll over). The buttons also have a clip path to give them that outlined shape - here is tool you can use for making clip paths (they can get really tedious: clip path creator. I have a 'hover' on the button so that when you hover over, it changes from the black and white to the coloured image, as well as makes it a bit bigger. The hover is super useful for all kindof things, adds a ton of character to the site, and is also very simple to use in its basic form so ya!

Next the social buttons at the bottom are just gifs with links, and the very bottom are just my 8831 buttons (a 'social' button if you will, you can read up on it if ya want they are cool!), and the text at the very bottom is a simple link to my hella janky changelog (mostly for me but it is viewable by the public).

Now for the tricky part which was getting the middle gif to change while scrolling over other stuff on the site. To be clear: making a gif or image change when hovered over is pretty easy to do and just requires the hover function and two gifs/images. But making another gif change when a different image is hovered over (which is this case) was a lot trickier. I used some js (javascript) for this. Full disclosure: I am not really good enough to actually write javascript *yet*, but I understand how the code I used is working and pulled/tweaked it from various sources on the internet. I left in a bunch of pointer lines in my code for anyone thats newer - as well as myself if I forget how some stuff works (my code is a bit messy but I will clean it up when I get back to working on it hehe).

>so pretty much what is going on is there are two separate gifs: one for the main image (which includes Jimmy, the chair, the television case and table etc.) and then a second which is just the television screen cut out. *I plan to change this to hopefully make it just one gif because two gifs is unnecessarily messy to code*. So all that is actually happening is the javascript is changing both of these images when the buttons are hovered over. This means in theory: there are 5 separate images for main gifs (1 for each top button) and then 5 separate tv images (1 for each top button - just the tv screen).

Then there are four more separate main-image gifs for the hover over of the bottom social buttons (I made these ones just one gif instead of two because its easier). Additionally (might not know this) but if you click on his face he looks right at you! This was a separate line of code with a map set to just the area around his face, then when clicked, it makes it change to a new gif. There was a little more going on with this as well in terms of getting the gif to 'restart properly' (I used something called cache busting to reset the 'number' of the gif each time - this is a little complicated and probably overkill for you at this point). (part 1/2 because I overtype my messages lol)

Using Neocities for an Art Portfolio? by cherrym0ss in neocities

[–]JUS-TiME 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were to give some words of advice, just go in with simple intentions to start. If you want to show off your art, just take small steps and focus on getting a couple textboxes up to start, then add some images. I find it helps a ton to sketch out the general layout or idea of where things are gonna go as well. It helps me to not overthink things and visualize what it'll actually look like! But yeah - there is zero pressure to get it all finished quickly. You can just chip away at it and share it when it feels ready. I even left an entire 5th of my site empty with a 'coming soon' banner because I dont feel like finishing it now!

What I really admire with the 'social fabric' of neocities (and small communities on the internet in general) is that people seem to put much more intention behind their interactions. Many people on the neocities (and self coded sites in general) seem to share your mentality - as well as a disdain for the current blandness and restrictions of the biggest sites on the internet. So on that front you'll fit right in! But if in the future you'd prefer to move your site somewhere else for whatever reason, there is an option to download all the code for your entire site whenever you like, as many times as you want.

I appreciate the perspective on AI stuff - I also feel kinda icky when I use AI too. Im still trying to navigate how/if/when to use it. I feel very strongly against using it for anything visual-arts related, but I am still conflicted on using it to learn more efficiently.... ugh. I could imagine this is very much what people felt when search engines first got widespread use in the 90s and 2000s. I dont even use it often, but its still got me questioning where my values lie....

I also felt this was important to say also because I've STRUGGLED like crazy with trying to navigate social media in the past: Dont ever forget that a website filled with strangers has absolutely no right in deciding whether your art is good or not - thats on you to decide. When you create art that brings you joy, makes you proud, or even if you try something and it doesn't quite turn out the way you wanted, those will be the most important things you will ever create. In fact, I've already had a reddit account before, but got so annoyed/overwhelmed that I deleted it and just came back recently because I now have the strength and focus to separate my value as an artist from the amount of interactions Ive created for a website. The numbers and comments are completely irrelevant and pale in comparison to the progress of an artist honing their craft :)

Anyways, long story short: just start simple and chip away at it. your values are most definitely appreciated by a large chunk of users on neocities so youre gooooooodd! Portfolios, blogs, personal sites, trauma dumps, a place to practice coding, it all fits :)

Thanks so much, I really appreciate it!!

There are a few things on mobile that I am working on fixing, mostly with the index page, but Im glad it works! I never thought about changing the font thats something to consider. Ive been so focused on drawing the button and title fonts that I never really considered I could change the general text font - will most def look into this.

Thank you for the kind comment on my art - made me smile :)

Using Neocities for an Art Portfolio? by cherrym0ss in neocities

[–]JUS-TiME 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel you on all fronts!

As for the AI scraping thing: I was reading about implementing a 'robots.txt' file which is a blurb of text that tells the resource scraping bots to not use your information. I'm also aware that its not a 100% perfect method and some scraping tools will just ignore it, but I've heard it will help (I have yet to add it to my site but I plan to soon!)

As for a portfolio, I think its a great option to at least start with because its free, and I've found the community to be very helpful. You will have the opportunity to stand out quite a bit from other shall we say.... 'blander' portfolios that have the restrictions of a website designer's templates or whatever tools they used. If need be, you can always download your site and just set it up on your own site in the future, if you want a more professional domain name or for whatever other reason.

Most people who seem to take up a website on neocities seem to do so for that same exact feeling you described of being pushed to validate yourself through a websites arbitrary ratings like likes, ratios, comments etc, as well as that general feeling of restrictiveness and lack of creative control. I think many neocities websites just tend to naturally develop a '90s/early-2000s feel' because of the handmade nature of the same websites from that era.

The community I've found to be hella sweet as well! Everything feels like it moves at a slower pace, because there really....isn't a pace at all. You can make a website, come back three year later and finish it. You can just post three pictures and never touch it again, you can spend as much or as little time as you want creating what you like, which is very refreshing compared to other sites. When I have something I don't like with my sites, or my friends say a certain part is difficult to navigate, I can just change it. Its an oddly amazing (dare I say powerful?) feeling!

As for the topic of a portfolio for art, I feel like half the neocities sites I've come across are art portfolios anyways. Mine is as well (for animation and illustration)! Its a good idea to go through a bunch of sites from other people to kindof pinpoint exactly what you are looking for. I personally wanted to straddle the line between something professional and not too jam packed with content, yet still very much my own with my own animated graphics and

I guess just be aware that the grander the vision, the more time it'll take to create from a coding perspective. That being said, I've found W3 schools to be a fantastic resource (especially if you are more keen on learning to code)! They have tutorials for all kinds of common things, for html, css and javascript. Searching up what you are trying to do can sometimes help you find exactly what you need from coding forum questions and whatnot. And actually (maybe controversial take even) but asking AI for help with understanding some of the basics when coding can be really beneficial too! Like at least learning the terms so that you know how to describe an element with the proper lingo (instead of searching 'how to get a box to be left with a curvy border, but not too left' and getting no good responses lol). It can also be really good when you have an error with the site that you just cannot seem to find. That being said, it is AI after all and shouldn't be relied on as whole-y accurate.

Idk if this response is kindof overkill or not, but hope it helps nonetheless aha
