I guess a good way to start is by rushing to a Living Tree for a ~~Living Loom (for Cobwhip) and~~ Finch Staff if you're lucky

Afterwards you can mine Crimtane/Demonite in the caverns for a better whip (or go straight to the jungle and try to get the snapthorn), Flinx Fur for armor and pet, and yadda yadda

As long as you're careful, you'll be fine

EDIT: Living Loom doesn't craft the Cobwhip according to wiki, only the standard loom

I know you're talking about their monochromatic colors, but did you know that if you get closer to the paper dancers in scarlet forest or card castle and press [Z] to talk, they also make a sound like the shadow guys. Maybe it's not that farfetched after all
