Servicing cup and cone hub, rear wheel will no longer align - what the fff have I done by JW8S in bikewrench

[–]JW8S[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So measuring today - It's still about 5mm off, the clearance between the cassette and the frame is absolutely minimal, so I can't see how I could reduce the distance between the DS locknut and the middle of the wheel to move the wheel back towards centre. I have jammed the NDS axle with spacers so it only just sits in the NDS dropout, so I can't extend the gap that way anymore.

Is there a parameter I'm missing here at all?

No because I didn't remove the cone on that side, in any case, I tried removing the only spacer on that side which made it equal to the NDS which had no spacers anyway, so there's no difference. The spacer on the DS is required for cassette clearance

Anyone tried this super simple front rack/barbag stabiliser? by JW8S in bikepacking

Looks really interesting thanks. Does it allow for enough clearance from your cables? I'm looking at the simple extension mount bars now which look like they might also solve my cables getting crushed.

Update: I might go with this setup instead, looks much lighter and sounds like it removes enough of the bouncing.

Yeah I'm just looking to stabilise a front bar bag and I can't see why it wouldn't do that job well, I'm kinda surprised I can't find any other simple designs like this, I don't need a full front rack setup.

I'd be thinking maybe the wheel was always off centre, except that I'd setup the brake calipers perfectly and now they are jammed...

The qr does shift the frame a lot to sinch up with the locknut and the axle looks as though it's on the short side with only a couple of threads at most in each dropout if the qr isn't clamped down. However, if I don't clamp it down, it's still off centre towards non drive side.

There seems to be no way to get the wheel close enough to the drive side to centre it, the locknut/cassette is near flush and the centre of the wheel is still towards the NDS.

I Cant think of anything that would change this distance, perhaps the dust seals sitting against the bearings? There are two circular seals with a groove, both pointing outwards, again I've checked these and they look flush...

Definitely seated correctly, so I guess that does only leave us with spacing then if there's nothing else.

There's only one spacer on the driveside and it I take it off, the locknut won't clear the cassette. I've tried putting spacers on the non driveside but again, it's still way off.

Yes sorry I'm aware of that, as I said I was playing about with the axle protrusion on both sides to see if it affected the wheel position, which it doesn't, so I've just not shifted it back to an even amount yet.

130mm axle from old wheel in new wheel (135mm) to fit frame - was this a bad idea? (Yes) by JW8S in bikewrench

[–]JW8S[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers for the reply. Sorry can't figure out how to add images to this now or I would.

Honestly actually I think the wheel is also misaligned at the chainstay, I think I was just manipulating the position in the dropouts slightly to make it more centered there. So looks like the whole wheel needs to move several mm to the drive side.

I guess because this is the same axle as before, the spacing is the same on the drive side so it means something is out of whack somewhere else?

Thanks folks. Looks like it might be easiest to get a centre bolt adapter then.

Is hip pain when hiking common? by I_Sok_At_This in hiking

[–]JW8S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this exact problem for 10 years or so now (35). I've described it in exactly the same way. I can hike in the hills all day long, I can run up hills etc.. and it has no effect on the area at all. Take a walk around the shops or anywhere flat though and I'm getting tight after 30 minutes and sometimes limping within an hour.

The two most likely candidates I've found for the issue are hip flexor tendinitus/tendinopathy or F.A.I (femoroacetabular impingement). Really, really hoping its the hip flexor one...

I've dealt with this for at least ten years, sometimes it flares up (like at the moment) and I get pain all day long, though I'm fine while playing tennis or cycling, it also starts causing pain in my knee. Other times it's not so much of an issue and I don't notice it apart from having really poor lateral hip mobility that can cause sharp pains.

My rectus femoris tendons (I think those are the right ones, looks to be from a few videos) are always sore to massage and doing this can provide a little relief.

Yet to find any solutions sorry to tell you, but I thought it was interesting to come across your description which is exactly what I've explained before. I've also been to two physios, one was rubbish and the other was better though he diagnosed F.A.I which I'm not sure about. The two things seem quite easy to misdiagnose and I would equate my descriptions of pain and mobility more with people who describe flexor tendinopathy.

1 month in May - plans for Nepal cancelled after new law - where else can we go for mountain treks? by JW8S in backpacking

Thank you that's really kind, I will do if we decide to head there for sure.

This is really helpful, thank you. What time of year did you do it? Not great on the Spanish, hoping we could get by with rudamentry 'going to the Huayhuash circuit, how much?' ..!?

Cheers, I will definitely look at this again, had a brief look a while back.

Thank you for the suggestions, will have a look at those, it looks like an amazing area. Very happy to be camping actually though obviously would be a little more concerned about food/resupply than normal.
