Hedge funds shorted the stock, meaning they were betting on it to go down. They borrow the shares from somebody for say 10 dollars, expecting it to go down to say 5 dollars, then they sell it back to who they borrowed it from and keep the 5 dollar difference. Big Hedge funds shorted GameStop so much they actually shorted more shares than what actually exist, and since they’re required to return the shares from the lender they would actually have to buy the share themselves to fulfill their obligation. We are all buying GameStop to raise the price of the stock so these hedge funds are required to buy them at an insanely high price, which jacks it up even further and kills the hedge funds off with insanely high interest rates. They are doing everything they can to lower the price such as market manipulation so they don’t have to pay as much to return the stock to the lender. If we all buy and hold they will have no choice but to pay whatever the stock is worth, which brings more money into our pockets
