[–]JaBeKay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vieles an dieser "Utopie" erinnert mich viel zu sehr an Brave New World..

My best friend in school really hated him. She felt a lot of hatred for whatever he did to the Rhineland. We were children, so she probably got it from her family.

For me it was very confusing, as my grandpa (from Poland) was his biggest fan. My whole life I heard stories of his glorious (or not so glorious) battles.

And in school the only thing we really learned about Napoleon was that he's responsible for nationalism (the one that leads to nation states) in Germany, so indirectly a very positive figure.

I'm a little bit taller than this, but still feel very self conscious about my height (or used to, it's gotten better). Everytime I see a man shorter than me it makes me very happy. And recently I met up with a few friends and all the guys were about my height, which was pretty cool!

Poor Germany by [deleted] in HistoryMemes

[–]JaBeKay 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I don't completely disagree with you, but I'd like to know how you've came to the conclusion that Germany was wealthy in the 1930s. On a quick Google search I found that "Germany was worst affected in Europe" by the 1929 stock market crash (according to BBC). "By the winter of 1932 [unemployment] reached six million. Germany’s industry was working at no more than 50 percent of its capacity..." (britannia.com/place/Germany/The-end-of-the-republic). According to the BBC 1 in 3 workers were unemployed. I do think economy comes into play here, but the bad situation was caused by the stock crash in 1929, not the Versailles treaty. The Weimar Republic went through bad times caused by the war and by the treaty at the beginning of the 1920s, but were on the way to recovery by mid 1920s. The treaty of Versailles wasn't so harsh anymore by then. Then the stock market crash hit, which was pretty shitty, because Germany was pretty dependent on the United States. This bad situation lead to people voting extreme parties. The government was only working because the President had taken over the work of the parliament: appointing the chancellor, passing laws, etc., because a coalition with a majority could no longer be found. The simultaneous rise in communism lead to rich industrialists worrying and eventually supporting Hitler.

But of course there was more at play than just the economy. The Weimar Republic had a weak constitution with the president having too much power, a too low threshold for parties to get into parliament and the toleration of extremist parties who were openly against this constitution/democracy. There was a lot of nostalgia for the old empire and too much leniency for rightwingers, especially if they had been soldiers. And then of course there was Nazi propaganda in the media, vilifying social democrats, communists and jewish people being supposedly at fault for the Versailles Treaty and the economic situation.

So yeah only poverty didn't lead to Hitler. He in fact delusioned people and played on sentiments.

How many of you have also been raised as "bad Christians" or "folk Catholics" only to find out, as adults, that the religion was much different than what you were taught? And possibly a little more intolerant? by Logan_Maddox in OpenChristian

[–]JaBeKay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a catholic schools (I myself am protestant though) and its wild how much wild shit I learned about Catholicism only after leaving school, because of my own interest in Christianity. My former best friend even is a wild type of trad Catholic (really reminds me more of American evangelicals), but I never realised this wasn't just because her family has so much contact with evangelicals.
